Polygon backgrounds, sprite characters. Games like Xenogears, Klonoa, Strider 2, etc.
These aged infinitely better than fully 3d games like Syphon Filter.

silent hill was fully 3D and the poster child for why that style aged very very badly.

with Final fantasy 8, they perfected 3d characters on 2d backgrounds, getting enough polys on the characters to make them look good, creating some truly impressive backgrounds, and making big strides with integrating them together. There were even prerendered FMV cutscenes that you could play on top of with polygon characters at key plot moments. FF8 is probably the most underrated game in the franchise.
