no. home fries are often called "country potatoes" and look like this:

and sometimes like this:

hash browns are shredded potatoes that look like this:

or if pressed, like this:

i think if the cube is small enough that it can be smashed with spatula or fork spoon into a hash brown than its a hash brown imo

those are gay outliers potato cubes tbf and the record does show the word "hash" in it

If you have an omelette or chicken fried steak, McD hash browns are not going to cut it. Too heavy, greasy. You want lighter potatoes to soak up yolk, gravy.

Home fries on south are universally country potatoes but I’ve seen them on dinner menus elsewhere as steak fries equivalent

American restaurants use too much oil, period. Chinese and Thai restaurants, full of oil.

Easy to make low oil breakfast potatoes with a cast iron skillet. Lightly oil the pan, toss and season taters over low heat, then bake in the oven.

The issue with home fries is that people cube the potato instead of slicing it. Slicing at a thin but varied thickness with small diced peppers and onions and some garlic (garlic powder is actually usually the best bet) and salt and pepper is the POTUS breakfast potato.

This except I don’t necessarily need the peppers. But the slicing gives them a nice char, which is essential

I agree that they are usually too thick and cubic when they should be flatish rectangles or squares 2.5x diameter to thickness ratio minimum imo for optimal crispness and cooking coverage

1 cm cubes are great. You want everything to cook uniformly.

If you are serving more than a couple people, non-uniform pieces are going to take too much time and care.

1cm is nuts that’s basically a hash brown if you just flatten in with spatula while cooking

You want a sizable Diameter with thinness imo, crisp outer edges with buttery soft potatoe center
