Cops have been using this shit to track people's cars for many years no? Why now? Why suddenly the outrage? No one was mad about this before. Has even one person been unduly prosecuted due to these things? What's the high profile case where something went wrong?

They had cell phone data in the Adnan Syed case from the 90s. When were we freaked out about cell phones?

It used to be that only carriers had that data, LEO would have to subpoena it, carriers could move to quash, judges might agree to quash if the request is too broad, etc.

Flock is a panopticon with laughably little oversight.

AI integration makes the surveillance layer much more effective and intense, but yeah, the media highlighting anything is almost always a slanted headfake

imagine the man-hours it would take to track and document a person’s habits and historical locations over a period of time. now imagine cross-referencing that to overlap with potential associates (if such a thing would even be possible for a human to reliably do). this data presumably now already exists at some level.

Don't cops need a warrant for that shit? A detective buddy of mine told me you need a warrant just to search for a narrow one hour band of time around when a crime took place to pull cell phone data from a tower. Judges typically don't allow fishing expeditions. Cops wouldn't get access to a massive amount of data over a long time span to pull an AI regression.

They get the data from Flock because that's what their contract with Flock entitles them to.

The data is being used however they want.

Seems unlawful to make an arrest when your probable cause is this guy drives over here a lot.

Now if they suspected it was a drug dealer and tested their mail for substances that would be different. You can probably create a suspect profile from Flock data. But you need probable cause to make an arrest.

Pulling a guy over because he goes to Michigan seems inadmissible even if the cop detects the odor of weed. That would be fruit of the poison tree. You have to have more probable cause to make a traffic stop imo.

i am not an expert but it’s not immediately clear to me why you would need a warrant to access the department’s own/contracted resources and even if that were to be the case then i am sure our festering ttt banana republic in steep decline will not maintain the importance of that distinction indefinitely.
