We're all (for the most part) saving for retirement and have significant resources. Does everyone just live beyond their means?

Recent analyses of U.S. household finances show low retirement preparedness for most:

About 54% of American households report no dedicated retirement savings (such as 401(k)s, IRAs, or similar accounts), according to the Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances (the key benchmark, with 2022 data still widely cited in 2025–2026 reports).

Median savings are modest (the midpoint, less skewed by high earners): Roughly $18,880 for those under 35, $45,000 for ages 35–44, $115,000 for 45–54, and $185,000 for 55–64. Averages are higher (e.g., $537,000 for 55–64) because a small group has much larger nest eggs.

Among workers (including those with zero savings), one study found a median defined-contribution plan balance of just $955.

About 59% of Americans have some retirement account, but participation and balances vary hugely by income, job type, and age. Many feel behind: 58% of non-retired workers say their savings lag where they should be.
