Sears’ extremely slow and long crash landing is what helped me finally understand “goodwill” in accounting terms.

always a sign of a good dead mall when they still have the Sears signage up years after the store closed.

The level of ineptitude it took to tank them is something special. Just the Craftsman brand of tools should have been enough to keep them viable but they sold that off and then Craftsman was run into the dirt too.

sears lost because it had standards. besides not being tied to mall foot traffic walmart and target won out by transforming themselves into logistically optimized prole feeding troughs for high-velocity low-margin shit-tier goods. meanwhile sears was running quality brands like craftsman and land's end and had whole departments staffed with knowledgeable salesmen. was not sustainable particularly as white suburbia bled out and malls died. by the time they sold off craftsman it was way too late and they were lucky to get what they got for it.

There’s a good long read out there how Sears had all the tools in place and was better positioned than anyone else to become what Amazon became and they just completely fucked it up.

Now Amazon mails out physical wish book catalogues every Christmas season just to rub their noses in it.

nah.

i worked there briefly during ite before starting lolschool. it was stunning how old and outdated everything was. the POS system was ancient but they wouldn't change it because every time they had tried it was a collassal failure. one time someone found hundreds of thousands of dollars of electronics inventory from several years ago that was just not in the system. meanwhile we could never keep newer stuff in stock. they'd send us like one or two things. the only customers were "sears people", old farts who just defaulted to them for everything.

i worked for several large retailers and sears was by far the shittiest. the only reason they lasted as long as they did was their reputation, which they sqaundered for decades.

Craftsman used to be the US version of Wera. High end tools. They tanked it to the level of Harbor Freight only worse because Harbor Freight is cheaper for the same level of garbage tools. The tanking happened before they ever sold it off so cry me a river. They destroyed an amazing tool franchise.

I’ve wondered how TJ Maxx/Marshalls gets their inventory now that all these shitty mall dept stores have finally closed. Stocking their stores with shit they get at liquidation prices from failed dept stores was their bread and butter for years. You can already tell now how they used to be stocked to the gills with Polo shit and now there’s barely any bc all the smaller dept stores would all have a RL section. They prob now have to go through all the DTC clothing brands that failed one by one to get inventory which seems like a much bigger pain in the ass

You nailed it. Somehow though the selection at Nordstrom Rack is worse than Marshalls, so they seem to have figured it out. Marshalls still has a Polo RL section, and lots of Michael Kors and Under Armor/Champion. Rack has weird stuff like Tony Bahama.
