No nigger semi autos are 180 and considered equal to the O/U for competition shooting. For example, the Beretta A400 XCel is 180 and I think Doodikoff has one. For prestige, however, o/U is in a league of its own

A400 parallel Target model, it’s amazing. Recoil is almost nothing, a 110lb girl can shoot with it and not freak out.

And at the skeet ranges, the dudes with $10k Krieghoff O/U don’t seem to look down their noses too much at it. And I’m not convinced at all that their guns shoot better or feel smoother.

But yeah as far as prestige yoi can’t beat one of those expensive O/U

Some of those have “tubes” where you can make the gun any shotgun caliber

100% prestige, it is apparently a little hard to get the barrels lined up just so, but not even close to justifying what the good ones cost

got it, so in theory there is some 'precision machining' type of argument, similar to say a watch case on a rolex where people talk about some added curvature, etc.

The really good, top of the line O/U shotguns will just last. If you're a serious clay shooter, like where you're shooting quite literally 5,000+ rounds a year, then the top of the line O/U will just last and not break down. If you go with like a $700 O/U, the gun will begin to fall apart when you're 5,000+ rounds into it.

SAAMI spec for 12ga rounds is like 12k psi, only a few manufacturers can make a reliable O/U hinge that survives this hundreds of thousands of times.

I mean $1500 for good semi vs $3500 for a good o/u honestly isn’t enough of a difference to not just get the one you want

At those prices I don’t really care unless someone told me a semi is objectively better, not just better for the price

That said I’m hesitant about recoil (and yes I know I need to just go to a club and try some guns and this is all academic for now)

Feel like a 20ga o/u would be optimal but everyone recs 12 over 20 because of ammo availability I guess? I’m never gonna go hunting though so if a 20 is good enough for clays why wouldn’t I go 20 for the lighter recoil

yeah the $1500/3500 isn't a huge difference, as the $3500 OU is still a little lower-end or mid

I shot a $10k Krieghoff, and honestly my $1700 Beretta semi auto didn't feel a lot different (but the $10k one clearly had nicer fixtures, trigger, etc)

The first time I ever shot sporting clays, I used my buddy's old 20 gauge with a wooden stock. I think we were doing about 100 shots. By the 60th I started noticing some pain in my chest/shoulder where I rested the gun, and every shot after that got more and more painful. By the end it was super painful. That night, I took my shirt off and had a huge bruise across my entire chest - from a 20ga. I read somewhere that 20ga might have a more "focused" kick.

All of that aside, just get a 12 gauge. Its the standard for sport shooting. 7.5 or 8 shot

There are a few features that add utility - adjustable comb, high rib, porting - but pricing is almost entirely based on cosmetics and prestige. After name brand, the grade and finish of the wood is the single biggest factor that influences price. After that there's the polish and coating on the receiver. For example, the difference between the $7500 Browning 725 Citori and the $2500 Browning 725 Citori comes down almost entirely to the quality of the wood and finish. For the most part they're mechanically identical aside from the extended chokes on the pricier one.

O/Us are superior to semis for clay shooting (and all shotgun shooting in which you’re only shooting one round) because the bore axis on the lower barrel, which is the one you shoot, is lower than a semi auto’s. The semi auto’s bolt/bolt carrier have to travel over the trigger mechanism, whereas the o/U’s is fixed and can be placed directly in front of the hand.

semi auto gas operated guns are going to be softer shooters. only downside is that you have to clean them more.

Take the 28ga pill. 28ga is incredibly fun to shoot and great for quails and pheasants.
