The doods who are all in charge of the political stuff have some arcane religious affiliation that relates back to some dynasty or tribe who hated the Ottomans and saw Shia islam as a vehicle for pushing the Ottomans out of Iran, Syria and Lebanon. Iran is just where they have their capital right now. They weren't even thinking about taking over Lebanon until Israel began eyeing it. They just wanted "Ottomans" out.
