Possibly. Really hard to know what the cardinals are thinking right now or what will motivate them behind a particular candidate.

He's 70 which is a good age for it because you know you aren't committing to a super long papacy but it still leaves enough time to get some papal initiatives and momentum going.

not sure if they can really get to 80+ votes for him after Francis. My guess is the conservatives are more driven than ever right now.

Interesting. I can't think of a less transparent bet than the next pope given everything is shrouded in secrecy, there are no polls, there is little to no info about who is even going to campaign for it (which I assume they do but there is also no info about that), there are no public statements from any cardinals about who they support, etc.

I'm not sure anyone expected Bergoglio.

Ratzinger was the runaway favorite in online betting markets when he was named pope in 2005

I don't really rmember that. I guess vatican watchers who pay close attention to l’osservatore romano and other ital outlets focused on the vatican can read between the lines a bit. but even though it was rumored Bergoglio came in 2nd to ratzinger no one really thought he was in the running.

Yea i get that what i was saying is this method failed for bergoglio. and there werent online betting markets in 1978 so we only have two data points. one was correct in selecting ratzinger and the other was wrong in whoever they ranked ahead of bergoglio. seems like not much to go off of to say that parolin is the 'frontrunner' given all the other unknowns.
