In 2017, the Paradas started working with Warren Getler, co-author of “Rebel Gold” and a former Wall Street Journal reporter. Getler told them he believed Confederate sympathizers allied with a secretive society known as the Knights of the Golden Circle likely stole and hid the gold.
The Paradas and Getler say ground-penetrating radar had identified buried metal and an additional piece of equipment suggested it had the low electrical resistivity of gold.
Dennis Parada first approached the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. But after his trail cams caught state officials at the site, he worried they would try to dig it up themselves.
In January 2018, Getler set a meeting with the FBI in Philadelphia. He and the Paradas brought the test results, descriptions of the cave and a story from a military archive describing a government gold shipment “that came to grief” in the Allegheny Mountains in June 1863.
The FBI hired its own surveyor, who brought a machine called a microgravity meter to the site and found a large mass with a density suggestive of gold.

Soon after, in March, Special Agent Jacob Archer filed a 33-page affidavit in federal court in Philadelphia detailing his meeting with the three men and those findings. He asked for and got a warrant to seize gold belonging to the U.S. Treasury—saying he was concerned the state could unlawfully claim it.
The FBI brought more than 50 agents and dug down 12 feet, but says it came up empty. “Nothing was found, and the excavation ended on Wednesday, March 14,” it said at the time.
That didn’t satisfy the Paradas or Getler, who say they were ordered to remain in Kem Parada’s Mazda 3 hatchback during most of the dig.

“They say, hey stay in your car. Stay warm. We’ll let you know when it’s time to go up the hill,” Kem Parada recalled.
After being shown an empty hole, a furious Dennis Parada asked Agent Archer if he had taken the gold, according to the three men, who say they were escorted off the mountain.
Also gone was any hope of seeking a hefty finder’s fee.
The Paradas say they have since spoken to a local resident who said she saw lights and heard the FBI working late at night, while other residents reported seeing armored vehicles in town.
“I’ve come to the unavoidable conclusion that the FBI did take the treasure under cover of darkness,” said Getler.

The Paradas sued the FBI last year in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C. seeking enforcement of a Freedom of Information Act request. They now allege the FBI has failed to turn over certain records and doctored some photos to conceal a night dig.
The FBI declined to comment on the lawsuit, but denies it kept digging at night.
The agency told the Journal that while geophysical testing “had suggested a potential cultural heritage site at Dents Run, that possibility was not borne out by the excavation.”
