I have read all of those except I never got the chance to finish Shelby Foote because I have kids and no free time to sit and read. That will be a retirement project for sure.

The beginning is fantastic it starts out with how Jefferson Davis was a landed gentleman and went to West Point where he was a drunk and last in his class.

Back in those days you could be a complete fuck up and still rise to do great things.

It's still true that you can be a member of the aristocracy and fuck up and rise to do great things

two of our last four POTUSSIES for example were born rich, fucked up a lot, and still becummed POTUS

Was the bookcase fit-for-purpose?

I had to spend a ton of time this spring fabricating supports for my bookshelves, as most simply won't support a weight of 30-40 lbs/liner foot typical of real books.

I specialize in early anno domini dated coins of Western Europe. Similar to incunables, these are coins dated prior to 1500 AD, typically employing earlier forms of Hindu-Arabic numerals (i.e., medieval or gothic numeral forms).

I fit into the definition of a numismatist more than collector, the difference being the former is more research-oriented whilst the latter focused simply on acquisition.

I always had an interest in coins (likely influenced from general interests on both sides of the family).

I started out in early American copper coinage, but forming a famous collection of those isn't possible on my salary -- a complete set of large cents runs around $10-15M. US coins have also been researched to death over the past 150 years, so there's nothing new to discover.

The research isn't limited to hunks of metal; rather, the focus is on historical context. I have to expand my background in English & Latin to include Dutch, German, & French; explore the history & evolution of Arabic numeral forms; track down primary references to calculate emissions, &c. To wit: if someone were to show you an ancient or medieval coin, could you even read it?

A numismatic library isn't a bunch of books about coins. Mine includes history, archaeology, language, economics, monetary policy, cartography, heraldry, calligraphy, numerals, calendars & dating, and even religion.

I can't speak for those specializing in ancients (I only have a casual interest in the coins from Messana with the hare), but I imagine it's similar.

Coins are just hunks of metal, and worthless outside of the value we assign them based on their context & history. Discovering, exploring, & expanding upon this context & history is the primary aim of the numismatist.

I only have two middling half cents, both in a type set :(

An 1804 HC with a die crack ain't exactly 1796 no pole HC, though. The latter would be more appropriate for bragging rights.

It's an old restored Gunn (Grand Rapids, Michigan) barrister from the first quarter of the 20th century.

Sunlight is a mortal enemy of books, so I got this for an area of the house that's exposed to light. (I block the windows in the library to prevent damage to those books.) I have a pair of free-roam house rabbits, so it also helps keep out rabbit fur.

Well the LS50s are passive while the M1s are active, so the LS50s need an amp

The coaxial design of the LS50s is very interesting, it eliminates a lot of issues with conventional tweeter/woofer arrangements. It has imaging that is superior to lots and lots of speakers

The bass performance leaves a bit to be desired. Due to room modes they go surprisingly low in my room but that comes at the expense of distortion and a pretty huge null in my room at about 90hz. I alleviated that by high passing the LS50s at 80hz and pairing them with a sub. I also run Dirac room correction and I'm a huge fan of that, it makes a big improvement for me

They're not an endgame speaker for me, the whole setup is lacking a bit in dynamics. But it sounds pretty great for the money I have into it and I'd have to spend a lot more to take it to another level

I've always focused on a flat frequency response for true sound, something that is (or used to be) nearly impossible to find outside of studio monitors. M-1s are flat from 50-15k, which at the time was pretty good for the speaker size.

My M-1s are from around 1999, so they do require a separate power amp. Actives were a lot more expensive back then, but seem to be the norm nowadays.

The game has changed, home audio speakers in general are trending toward a more neutral sound. The reason is that people generally don't audition speakers anymore, they buy online. So salespeople can't honeydick buyers by demonstrating them a speaker that has a bloated low end and hot treble.

Revel is a pretty major brand (it's a division of Harman/JBL, which itself is now a division of Samsung...) that has gone all-in on making neutral speakers and it seems to be working out for them. Check out the frequency response for their F226Be - within 1.5dB of flat from 65Hz all the way up(!)

https://www.erinsaudiocorner.com/loudspeakers/revel_f226be/

Personally I don't exactly chase a flat response. I tend to listen at pretty low levels. And if you know anything about equal loudness contours / Fletcher-Munson curves, listening at low levels means you're missing a lot of bass. So I bought an RME ADC-2 DAC, which is a pretty interesting piece because as far as I know it's the product with the most configurable loudness compensation.

Most monitors are active these days, yeah. And an increasing chunk of home audio speakers are active too. I'm not a fan though. Amps tend to die long before passive speakers do. With active speakers, if an amp dies and replacement amp modules are no long available, your expensive speakers are now practically junk. Everybody raves about Kii THREE BXT speakers. They are $31k active speakers. They have a two year warranty. It's mindblowing.

I'm using some oddball Nuforce Class D power amp that I picked up for cheap.

The rest of my setup is a Logitech Squeezebox Touch streamer, a MiniDSP Flex Digital w/ Dirac, an RME ADI-2 DAC, and an SVS SB12-NSD sub. The MiniDSP was the only piece I paid full retail for, everything else was heavily discounted or used. I paid about $3k for the whole setup.

The LS50s were kinda funny, I bought them last year when they were being cleared out for ~$715. The packaging said they were manufactured in 2012. So they were sitting in some warehouse for 11 fucking years lmao.

I really wanted a wall bookshelf, but couldn't fit one in my current house. They all seemed to require a good 11' of uninterrupted width.

Are those shelves rabbeted? I have had major issues with sag and had to reinforce all of mine with aluminum supports, even those with rabbeted faces.

On principle, buying any book that sounds appealing to you as soon as possible is a good policy.

Maybe im retarded and its just formatting::

This state-of-the-art reverse interlinear New Testament, created in partnership with The German Bible Society and Logos Bible Software, breaks with the convention of traditional interlinear texts by keeping the English as the top-line entry and placing the Greek text underneath it. This approach allows you to see firsthand the accuracy with which the ESV translators rendered the Greek text.
