As many of you know, Jimmy Kimmel's writer, Jacob Reed, directed an ad for the Kamala Harris campaign titled 'Men for Kamala.' The ad features what are presented as everyday male voters explaining why supporting Kamala Harris is the masculine thing to do. However, none of the men in the ad are actually regular voters—they are paid actors.

Moreover, their real-life circumstances differ significantly from the individuals they portray in the ad. Here are their stories:

- Wayland McQueen is a far-left, pro-Antifa comedian and actor who has, until now, found limited success. He does improv gigs at the Upright Citizens Brigade in Los Angeles. In a Twitter post from 2022, he explains what white privilege is and tells you why you need to acknowledge your white privilege. As of 2024 he is single.

- Lanre Idewu is an immigrant from Nigeria. He is also an actor who works at the D.C.-based OCTET Productions. He has many intimate pictures with the Obamas and the Bidens. Idewu, who is bisexual, has done gay-for-pay movies and nude solo shoots. In the "Men for Kamala" ad, he says he is “man enough to f-ing braid his daughter’s hair,” but the only problem is that he doesn’t have a daughter. Idewu isn’t braiding anyone’s hair.

- Mike Leffingwell, a gay man, also works at the Upright Citizens Brigade, where McQueen works. He is an acting coach, cartoon writer for Netflix and DreamWorks, and an actor in TV commercials. On his public Instagram page, he showcases his participation in his latest project—the "Men for Kamala" ad.

- Winston Carter, the heavyset fellow in the ad who claims to be a mechanic and rancher, lives in Los Angeles signed with Taft Broadcasting Company. He has found limited success in the acting world, mainly as an extra in films and as a character in the low-budget superhero film Spaghettiman.

- Tony Ketcham, the tough, rugged, bearded grandpa in his garage in the "Men for Kamala" ad, is also an actor. He now mainly does low-budget independent films like Car Botz, where he played the role of PePaw. Tony is unmarried in real life. In 2001, he played the extra role of “alcoholic consumer” in the movie Ghost World.

Tim Walz’s Hunting Gaffe Explained:🧵

I’ve done a lot of pheasant hunting. As a high schooler, I made extra $ assisting guides on pheasant hunts: getting the hunters in the field, flushing game for them to easily shoot, and making sure they are safe. And much more since those days.

You learn to spot the guys who are a potential danger to themselves and others. Everything about them is new: the shotgun, the gear, the clothing. They look like they’ve just stepped out of an LL Bean catalog. This isn’t meant as a criticism. But if you’re leading the hunt it’s a visual clue that he’s probably new to this and, in his excitement, he went to his local hunting store bought all the gear in an effort to look like one of the guys. It tells you to keep an eye on him and to be ready to offer quiet instruction so as not to embarrass him.

I don’t fault Walz for clearly being inexperienced with firearms and hunting. Anyone who is proficient in either had to learn sometime. For most of us, I think, the scorn heaped upon him is due to the fraudulent nature of it all. What VP candidate takes a day off to go hunting? Well, they don’t unless they see it as a photo op. Dems realize Americans think Walz is a beta male weirdo, so some campaign genius said, “I got it! He’ll go hunting! He’ll look manly!”

With the exception of “The Natural,” I generally hate sports movies because the lead actor usually looks like he’s never played sports in his life. Watching Walz handle a shotgun is like watching Keanu Reeves throw a football in “The Replacements.” It’s painful. (Robert Redford was believable as an aging baseball player because he clearly played the game as a boy. Same with Kevin Costner in “For the Love of the Game.”)

In this video, Walz appears to be having difficulty loading his shotgun while on a pheasant hunt. He tells the reporter, whose questioning tone suggests she’s not buying any of this, that it’s a Beretta A400.

The A400 is a semi-auto shotgun. Many guides don’t allow semi-autos on a hunt because they can’t see at a distance that you’re “safe.” A break-action double-barrel is therefore preferred since they can tell when your gun cannot be fired (be it loaded or not). This is because the barrel is on a hinge that “breaks” open to permit manual loading. And this is very important for safety. I would wager that most accidental shotgun deaths involve semi-autos.

This is all the more important in pheasant hunting. Unlike, say, deer hunting where you might sit in a tree all day long by yourself, pheasant hunting is typically done in large groups where the hunters are arranged in a crescent and marched through a field toward “blockers,” that is, hunters who stand still in a line. The idea is to drive the birds into the blockers and force them to flight.

Hunting in such close proximity with other hunters can be dangerous for a variety of reasons: the birds fly parallel to the ground at head level, excitable hunters start blasting away at everything that moves or don’t wait for the birds to reach a safe height, accidental discharges, etc. A guide wants to see that your weapon is open and therefore inoperable in all but the hunt.

The loading port on the A400 is beneath the weapon near the trigger guard. This type of loading is an acquired skill, and Walz doesn’t have it. (I’ll add that Walz says he bought it for trap shooting. In this he is correct. I wouldn’t want to use an A400 pheasant hunting. It’s not a field gun. It’s heavy. But it’s excellent for clays.) He fumbles around and, sensing he’s making a fool of himself, he appears to stop before he’s managed to get it loaded.

As you can see, this carefully choreographed hunt wasn’t so carefully choreographed. It’s become Tim Walz’s Michael Dukakis-in-the-tank moment. It’s also noteworthy that in this gaffe Democrats, for all their faux rage about “toxic masculinity,” unwittingly pay homage to masculinity and its appeal. They do know what it is. They just don’t know how to practice it.

DON’T show up to the hunting grounds in the middle of the day with a gaggle of reporters and camera men.

DO have only one person filming, hopefully on an iPhone.

DO start filming at oh-dark-thirty with Timmy driving a beat-up 2006 F-150, with the dogs hooting and hollering in cages in the bed, as Timmy stops at a Maverick to get gas, fill up his beat-up Stanley Classic thermos with black coffee and pick up a bag of chocolate donuts for breakfast (and some elk jerky for the pups to munch on).

DO show up at the hunting grounds just before dawn, talking in hushed tones, wearing red-lens headlamps, and moving quickly to a hide position or blind.

DON’T carry a $2,200 semi-automatic Beretta shotgun made in Italy.

DON’T be outfitted in pristine, brand-new “hunting” clothing that costs $1,200 that you picked up at the Orvis in Martha’s Vineyard while you were in town groveling to Barack Obama.

DON’T wear ass-less hunting chaps when everybody thinks you have a very deep "touch of the lavender" (as my Aunt Mary, God rest her soul, used to say).

DO carry a beat-up old Savage or Winchester pump action that obviously has seen a lot of use. (Better yet, bring Grandpappy’s family heirloom over/under that “He bought before the war, just before they sent him to Guadalcanal.")

DO wear well-worn hunting clothing that you bought on sale ten years ago at Cabela’s or Sportsman’s Warehouse.

DO show a lot of love for your well-disciplined dogs.

DON’T show that you don’t know how to operate your super-expensive Italian shotgun.

DO show an innate familiarity with your beat-up old Savage or Winchester and always demonstrate proper gun safety.

DON’T not get any pheasants.

DO bag your limit of pheasants and proudly display them in a picture with you, your gun and your dogs.

DO have a couple of shots of bourbon from a dented old flask before you call it a day.

DO call your son on the way home to tell him about the hunt.

DON’T say anything about Kamala Harris.

There are so many fakes and parodies on the Internet that I had to approach “Man Enough,” an ad ostensibly targeting male voters for the Kamala Harris/Tim Walz campaign, on mental tiptoe. I heard the premise before watching and was certain it had to be a meta prank of the Andy Kaufman school. Nobody could be that stupid.

It’s no prank. Written and directed by Jimmy Kimmel writer and Jacob All Trades Substack contributor Jacob Reed, “Man Enough” is a sincere attempt to win votes for Kamala Harris. It was made for Creatives for Harris and reposted by Vote Save America. Unless Reed’s entire career is performance art, which I can’t rule out, it’s both the most self-sabotaging political messaging campaign ever and a devastating satire of the progressive Un-Man archetype that could have been titled, “Sorry I Have One.” It will win the election for Donald Trump if enough men (or women for that matter) see it. The ad starts with three caricatured “masculine” images: Dude in cowboy hat feeding chickens, shaven-headed black man getting sets in on a bench press, bearded biker tinkering with ride in garage. Cowboy: “I’m a man.” Weightlifter: “I’m a man.” Biker: “I’m a man, man.” Motorcycle guy is wearing a shirt whose sleeves have been chopped off either with a fork or by an ex-Project Runway contestant inspired by The Flintstones:

The ad spins through more caricatures: guy with hay in pickup truck bed, guy standing in sun wearing Katherine Hepburn On Golden Pond gardening hat while propping elbow on rural porch, guy in blue gingham shirt standing in front of horse. They give their bona fides: they like their steak rare, they drink barrel-proof bourbon, and weightlifter guy is “man man enough to deadlift 500 and braid the [bleep] out of my daughter’s hair.” The turn comes when Gingham Horseman barks, “I tell you another thing I sure as shit am not afraid of. Women.”

I wondered what the horse’s SAG rate was. They are all actors. Weightlifter Lanre Idewu’s non-X work includes “sexy pool guy” from the Anne Heche/Ashton Kutcher vehicle Spread, while heavyset chicken-feeding dude who eats “carburetors for breakfast” is Winston Carter, front-seated in a Spaghettiman tub scene:

In Reed’s writeup, in many ways funnier and more revealing than the ad, he says we’re “overdue for a redefinition of what it means to be a man in America,” and hopes the Harris/Walz campaign “can start to shape that conversation.” But redefining “what it means to be a man” to Reed apparently requires denigrating existing masculine archetypes. Which is fine as far as it goes, except he’s mocking stereotypes that doesn’t exist outside of Hollywood, the imaginations of pre-pre-pubescent boys, and the writings of authors like Ruth Whippman. Well, and one more place. Cowboy, muscle man, biker, horseman: Reed is only a headdress short!

Look, I love the Village People. They were a great band, one of the best camp acts of all time, and one of the funniest burns ever on uptight America. But I don’t think it’s an accident this is what came out when “Creatives For Harris” (a group whose first webpage prompt reads, “I Represent An Affinity Group And I Need Creative Assistance”) took aim at what they think it “means to be a man” in middle America. The “White Dudes For Harris” model of self-flagellating beta-male, standing mute and service-ready with Gimp-style ballgag in its mouth while the Kamala-led DNC drums fingers on its head, has been subsumed in postmodern idiocy for so long, it only understands maleness as a collection of stereotyped identity markers.

If Reed really wanted to redefine “what it means to be a man” in a way that had a chance of reaching outside his circle, he wouldn’t dress these guys in the gender equivalent of blackface to recite lines like “I’m man enough to be emotional in front of my wife,” and “Have all the cats you want!” Instead, he’d get a bunch of actual Harris-supporting men, have them dress as they normally would (with or without smart glasses or man-buns), and say the same things, minus the sardonic convulsions. Be who you are and say what you mean, you might win some people over.

Instead, he hired actors to pose in front of fields and pickups to thump chests about benching and bourbon, only to shift and proclaim in Hee Haw voices that they cry at West Side Story and “love women who support their families” (but also women who decide not have families! Whatever you want! It’s fine!). One by one, the actors recite, almost in homage to Stanley Kubrick’s I’m Spartacus! scene, “I love women!” But they’re all still wearing their ironic Village People costumes and hamming the delivery, so you don’t believe any of them. It’s camp without libido, which I didn’t think was possible. The only hint of eroticism comes with Gingham Man says he’s not afraid to be emotional “in front of my horse,” then pauses to look longingly at the horse (the script surely reads something like Looks longingly at horse). In a 90-second ad a pause is a lifetime, so there’s a point, but what? It looks like regret that he can’t fuck the horse anymore. Because he supports Harris/Walz? Even that feels like bad trade.

Batya Ungar-Sargon suggests the Harris ad isn’t actually targeting men, but was put out to “reassure her base—college educated women—that the Democratic Party is truly theirs. The only men the party recognizes are these emasculated, AI generated putzes.” I buy that’s true on some level, but the party clearly is sweating the male vote. They dragged Barack Obama out to give a speech to “the brothers” (I covered two Obama elections and he was never anything but phobic about that kind of language) while sending Tim Walz on a “man-focused media blitz” meant to involve walking with Michael Strahan on a football field as well as “pheasant hunting with social media influencers.” Walz nearly blew his balls off on the pheasant hunt and Good Morning America seems to have balked on the field shot, so it’s hard to avoid reading “I’m a Man” as anything but another messaging fumble. Even if it’s part intentional in-joke, there’s no way they’ve properly calculated how this goes over.

Clowning the stereotypical male for not “supporting women” will go down like the proverbial vomit smoothie with the masses of “unreimagined” men who do love and support the women in their lives. Equating failure to support Harris with being “afraid of women” also won’t go over well, but at least that’s part of a toxicity charge that isn’t new. If this is the “reimagined” gender model, are there even women who want in?
