Happens all the time. There is a splashy new innovation. People buy one as an experiment or as a signal "omg check out my waterbed."

Eventually the market gets saturated enough where it is common place, and everyone realizes "hey, these fucking suck" and everyone quits buying them.

they got less convenient over time. early ones were just inflatable bladders that you could fill with a garden hose.

that had the obvious problem with punctures and flooding, so they were gradually redesigned with multiple sealed compartments, the filling/draining process became much slower, and they kind of FELT more like regular mattresses due to the compartment walls.
