You see, Barack Obama made a joke. Last weekend, he said Donald Trump’s White House redecorations look like “Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory.” That was mildly funny, which is the best we can expect from a politician on the stump, and most people snorted and moved on. Not the right wing. “Making fun of chain restaurants is quite an angle for Democrats, who keep insisting that they haven’t forgotten the working man in Middle America,” sniped the Journal, that champion of the American worker. Treasury secretary Scott Bessent, net worth $600 million, dined at a Cheesecake Factory in protest. (He ordered the French Dip Cheeseburger, or the Diabetic’s Bane.) Obama’s comment “goes exactly to why Democrats lost the middle class, why they lost blue-collar voters,” Martha MacCallum said on Fox. Clay Travis, a right-wing sports commentator, apparently made up a story about visiting the Cheesecake Factory as a child.

Somehow, it gets dumber. Evan Barker, an UnHerd contributor who quit Democratic politics to rebrand as a contrarian working-class whisperer, has tweeted almost incessantly about the Obama joke since last weekend. “When I got to go there as a kid a few times it was a big deal, a fancy treat,” she posted. Barker says this is proof of her bona fides; as she would later inform Hasan Piker, she is “the real-deal bitch” who “lived in the trailer parks of Missouri.” At this point, I laughed in a way I hadn’t at Obama’s speech. I don’t know anyone who talks like that in real life, and I’m from rural Appalachia, which usually ranks near the top of the right wing’s taxonomy of Places That Get to Be Real America. Again, we don’t have any Cheesecake Factories back home. The closest location appears to be in Knoxville, Tennessee, which is quite a drive, and it opened in 2013, when I was 25 years old. I didn’t go to a Cheesecake Factory or even know what it was until I moved to D.C., Satan’s own metropolis, for work. In fact, many Factory locations are in the suburbs. On X, reporter Natalie Fertig observed that most rural Americans probably “live hours from any Cheesecake Factory and just see it as another urban chain with a comically long menu located in some high-end shopping center you’d probably hate parking in.” Olive Garden is another story, but I digress.

There is almost no point in fact-checking a manufactured outrage. Barker isn’t posting about the Cheesecake Factory because she has a unique vantage on working-class America and its preferences. I didn’t grow up with much money either, but personal experience is not an argument on its own. Sometimes it doesn’t even provide much insight. After all, Obama wasn’t making a joke at the expense of working-class aesthetics; the punch line is Donald Trump, a wealthy would-be authoritarian who spends more time on renovations than on governing. Barker — and Bessent, and MacCallum, and the editorial page of the Journal — are performing a style, not making a point. They miss the joke so they can stir up an outrage cycle, which can only survive on social media, and only for a few days. They’re dancing for the algorithm and a handful of cable TV bookers who should know better by now. One of Barker’s latest posts abandoned any pretense of public concern. “My Cheesecake Factory tweets have made the national news,” she boasted, because MacCallum had mentioned her on Fox.

That’s the American Dream to this crowd. Not universal health care or paid family leave or a living wage, but chicanery that pays. A thousand snake-oil salesmen lurk offstage, dreaming of their big moment and the McMansions they’ll buy. (I can make fun of McMansions because I’m a Real American who grew up in a snake-infested ranch home.) And why shouldn’t they dream? J.D. Vance is the vice-president of the United States. Clearly anyone can call themselves a tribune of the people and make it work, as long as they attack the same religions, ethnic groups, sexualities, and gender identities their patrons happen to despise. Nothing is real because nothing has to be real.

In the right’s fantasyland, the Cheesecake Factory is a temple to American values. The failed Cracker Barrel rebrand was an offense to Mamaw and Papaw, for whom it is a cherished third space. Bud Light betrayed the working class because of a single brand partnership with a trans woman, who received death and bomb threats after conservatives made an example of her. The Obama presidency was itself a catalyst for so many fake outrages that I can hardly remember them all. Remember when Michelle Obama wanted healthier school lunches for children? A horror, because “there must be recognition that parents — not the first lady or Congress — know what’s best for their children,” a Heritage Foundation analyst complained. Remember when Obama wore a tan suit? The beer summit?

Of course, this kind of thing goes much farther back. I was an Evangelical kid in the 1990s and early 2000s; I remember when Jerry Falwell said Tinky Winky, the Teletubbies character, was gay because he was purple, which is “the gay-pride color,” and wore a triangle, which is “the gay-pride symbol.” I remember the Disney boycotts. I remember a frenzy over The Lion King because the stars in a night scene allegedly spelled “sex” to corrupt America’s children. I know that in 2015, an influencer named Joshua Feuerstein filmed a video wearing a Jesus shirt and a handgun to accuse Starbucks of taking “Christ and Christmas” off its holiday cups. The outrage never ends. It never gets smarter and or more factual. The snake will keep eating its tail as long as someone has a book to sell, or a career to launch, or an office to win, so: forever.

Nevertheless, I do think our cheesecake defenders are beginning to exhaust the well. At some point, there is a bottom. They may dig through it, hoping to unleash a subterranean monster, but if nothing happens and they bore their audience, the effort won’t matter. People have other things to worry about. The Cheesecake Factory cycle is so detached from human experience, so half-hearted an outrage, that I feel a kind of embarrassment for the people who are trying to keep it alive. Karoline Leavitt says that Democrats “can’t appreciate beauty.” Okay? The White House called the Cheesecake Factory “a great American institution” and threatened a surprise of some kind. I considered many possibilities but not the inevitable dull reality, which turned out to be an AI-generated video of Trump waving to a crowd in front of a yassified Cheesecake Factory.

But no circus can improve Trump’s historically low approval numbers or his party’s chances of retaining the House next week. Many Americans can’t afford groceries, let alone a meal at the Cheesecake Factory. Because of the war on Iran, gas prices have risen to an average of more than $4 a gallon nationwide. Diabetes keeps me out of most chains, but it does remind me that 41 percent of households surveyed by the American Diabetes Association in 2026 had to ration, delay, or skip insulin because of costs over the last 12 months. Outrage may keep a grift going, but voters can’t eat it or save their lives with it. Reality still matters — to most of us.

given how the midterms are likely going to go, we are probably in the last 3 months of the trump presidency. kind of hilarious that trump's political career was bookended by obama taking potshots at him. the 2011 correspondent's dinner ridculing from obama was likely the main reason he ran, and now this. the difference is trump made obama pay for the jokes back then. now trump just looks like a JEWED fat faggot.
