Defense spending is another matter, but I for one am glad that we feel as safe as we do because of our tax spending on the military and foreign aid that stabilizes our allies. That stability benefitted OP and he needs to pay it back. |

Not counting the 1099 taxes for social security and medicare my wife pays, our federal tax rate is like 15% - and that's not even accounting for the fact that like $35,000 is knocked off tax free for 401k/HSA/childcare funds.
I feel like that's pretty reasonable given our true HHI is like $450,000. |

so that's 18% before you even get into other deductions (and 14% if you're including all your non-taxable income)
