I think it'd make sense to introduce a recurring feature, similar to what's done on private torrent trackers, where registration quietly opens for a day or two at random each month. I'm all for keeping registration closed since it keeps the retards away, but I don't think it'd hurt to open the doors like that once or twice a month. |

Rather than having a banner at the top saying registration is closed with a countdown like "15:03:58hrs until it opens," the registration form could simply switch to a simplified form at random, without any announcement, and remain open for a limited time.
I've seen some guys on X who want to get onto the website, so their options are to find someone at a local university, fuck them and get access to their .edu address, use an alumni address if that's an option, or just lurk, follow the discussions, sit on their asses, and wait. They should understand that registration might open at some point during a given window, whether that's one month or two. |

The guy lurks, gets familiar with the site's culture, and then boom, at some point he's rewarded with a simplified registration form. The cooldown shouldn't be too long or too short, though. Not knowing the set day or time should make the whole thing more addictive, with people thinking, "maybe if I stick around for another day or two, it'll open." That's the idea. |
