WoW guild - "ok this is a complicated raid. We're going to carefully research how to do it while maxing our efficiency. We'll place the best players in the best positions, and distribute the loot fairly. Also, we'll keep open lines of communication, and constantly monitor to ensure everyone is playing their role."
Biglaw - "ok this is a complicated project. We'll delegate to this junior partner who has little relevant experience, who will delegate to an incompetent senior associate, who will lean heavily on clueless juniors and contract attorneys. We won't take measure of all the work to be done until the 11th hour, or until after it should have been done. There will be no communication and no monitoring. Oh and the loot will all go to a sr partner who knows the gc"

imagine McKinsey consultants, banks, and hedge funds somehow turning their work into an online video game so aspies and Chinese grinders would do it for free.
your guild cut the R&D division, cancelled the Christmas party, and removed the water cooler, reducing personnel expense run rate by 45%! *gold axe trophy added to your virtual case*

Whenever there's new content, watching nerds crowdsource and coming up with the optimal way to solve problems is truly amazing. Within hours, various avenues have been explored, several ideas tried and abandoned, and ultimately the best way discovered and refined. Extraneous steps or mere personal whims are whittled away, until perfection is reached because there is nothing left to take away or improve.
Biglaw: Nobody really knows what this clause means, but let's include it because it's market.

Fact
I ran a guild with almost 100 members in WoW vanilla (ended up being voted the leader of the guild when I didn't want the job but did pretty good and then quit just before BC came out) and we got shit going better than any place I have worked at from an organizational perspective.

I was an officer in my servers top guild in Everquest (Eternal Wrath). We were also top 3 or 4 gamewide when I played. We were definitely OCD organized. We had a list of everyone's home phone and when contested spawns popped we would all skip work/school and beat everyone to it. We were like a military unit. Was crazy. What was crazier is that the guild leader and most of the officers were under 20 years old (this was 1999-2001). Last I heard the guild leader was working some low level office job and still playing mmorpgs lol.

Nothing will ever been as fun as the first few years of everquest. No maps, every item was tradeable, exp loss/deleveling at death, no locked encouters (kill stealing/training), everything was contested, and you couldn't get anything done without other people. There was real risk in playing the game. There was a huge sense of community, people had reputations, and there was real danger going into the world (you could lose your body in the middle of nowhere and never be able to find all your shit).

No clue. I played Everquest 2 with my wife and that was a lot of fun. But I think part of that was the nostalgia.
I plan on playing Pantheon. It is made by the same person who created Everquest and it is supposed to be a throw back to the way things used to be. I'm super stoked about it.

So much human potential is untapped or wasted - I've seen people who are under 25 or so just being the most ruthless high level organizers and strategists.
It sucks that it is either a bifurcation into moms basement or real world success
Need to revamp how we brain wash with screen devices so that addictive video games extract labor from people. Er sorry our management paradigm encompasses gamification
There are more than you might imagine; but they either submit to the superior management of aspie white dudes or fall into the drink. Relations between the sexes would be much improved in conditions of dispassionate meritocracy.

I played PC games for over 20 years but I never touched an MMORPG. All FPS and some RTS.
I was in a few FPS clans. They were run like a cross between a law firm and a national guard units. FPSs are mostly about individual skill. The main challenge is trying to get people to show up, then you basically just do what you want with very poorly defined roles in a game. Kind of like toddler soccer matches. Our “admin” functions were limited to a terrible website and a forum where we would trash talk about any old thing. Again, like a law firm.
