As a server in Oregon I made about $30 an hour with the high minimum wage + tips, it wasn't too bad. Panera sucks, agreed, not sure what happened there. Unfortunately where I live in Alabama, Starbucks is the only good coffee shop where I know my drink will taste the same every time and they have heavy cream. I suppose mediocrity is all relative, what other generation are you judging it against? I enjoy my life very much. I own a home, work from home, and have a new car which would be considered high end luxury by any other generation's standards. I'm not wealthy, I've worked hard in my earlier years, bought real estate at the right time and the right place and sold it at the right time. I didn't get into massive student debt or have any kids. I'm going on a Carribean cruise for a week to 3 different islands for $800, all things that weren't possible in my grandparents lifetime when they were my age. I'm loving it! Gen X, to the extent it patronized a chain like Starbucks, mainly just proved up the business cases for actual artisan coffee houses and awesome shit like those drive thru bikini coffee places. Gen X shits on boomers and millennials when it comes to food culture. Above all Gen X’s crowning achievement was pointing out that eating meat and dairy that’s pumped full of hormones by giant beef and diary conglomerates is a bad idea as is eating fruit and vegetables coated in pesticides. If it was up to boomers they would have kept pumping their meat full of hormones until they all had third arms growing out of the backs and millennials would refuse to eat any meat that wasn’t raised on a diverse farm.
