I don't know about this. Watched Clerks the other day, and I was thoroughly entertained, almost like running into an old fiend who I haven't seen since the 90s.

Imo critics thought it was intellectual bc it was black and white and they didn’t realize smith was a prole Loser and the movie is about him (except he didn’t fuck 12 girls) and it’s the exact store he worked at. Like they thought he was being ironic or decrying NAFTA because it was 1994 and he was underemployed. But really it’s like “I wear a hockey jersey every day. I play roller hockey in the movie!”

You could almost imagine the video store having Saturn games btw. Almost.

Imo the Film is a warning about a future without Indian immigrants. Stores staffed by white guys. Bleak, Gen X nihilism. Kevin Smith didn’t even smoke weed irl. Let alone fentanyl. He played hockey in the middle of the day to stave off obesity and hang out with his friends. This would’ve been a bleak future and we are fortunate to have avoided it imho. In the current timeline, Indians staff convenience stores, Gen X is sedentary and doesn’t play hockey and has no friends, no video stores, and Kevin smith started smoking weed in 2008, and we’re better off for it.

IIRC those were actually a trilogy, you needed to watch them in that order

People said the same thing about Office Space, Fight Club, and The Matrix

Clerks holds up great and I’m very fond of Clerks 2 even though it’s nowhere close to as good (it’s a crummy sequel but a fun gross out comedy on its own merits)
