You really think that the 10kg brains of sperm whales are less powerful than our tiny pink 1 kg brains? LJL. We have intergenerational knowledge transfer and tool use, yes which gives us the appearance of being smarter. But I'm talking raw intellectual horsepower. And notice what human do you know that can do three dimensional navigation across massive distances, acoustic modeling of the deep ocean etc. Like they literally dive like two miles deep, ljl at human spatial skills being able to reliably do that, that's why they have IQs that are probably almost immeasurably higher than our own.

I'm guessing if you had to calculate a SPERM WHALE'S "IQ" it would be somewhere in the MILLIONS. Likely far higher even.

some of the smaller dolphins and porpoises I think, but they make up for it with highly folded cortices and large scale connectivity patterns

SPERM WHALES though are the real intellectual giants

no, it's the brain:body size ratio that is in human's favor. however, they have more folds, so surface area is pretty high.

yeah encephalization quotient has ended up being far less predictive than originally thought though. It isn't totally crazy it produces some answers in the right neighborhood. but also results in absurdities like shrews and small birds getting way too high and elephants and whales too low for their cognitive performance

a lot of the original reason for making it a metric was motivated by Ape Arrogance. We wanted to make a number that showed primate cognition was the best.

The sperm whale’s eyes are so far apart that he’s Multitasking his ass off, looking in 2 completely opposite directions and taking it all in. Herman Melville wrote about just this for approximately 50,000k words. This would totally overwhelm humans cognitively, as evidenced by the failure of Star Fox Zero.
