people aren't following through to the media links, they're just reading the little AI summaries. media are puckering big time. can this finally be the death of a huge slice of MSM?

Here’s a one‑paragraph summary of the thread:

Users are reacting to a TechCrunch article about Google's AI‑generated overviews siphoning traffic from mainstream media — with one poster declaring, “AI is KILLING ad revenue for MSM,” as readers often skip clicking through to the original sources. Others chimed in that AI’s summarization threatens web publishers, even those already using AI to write content, warning about a collapse in original internet sources: “AI is going to destroy most of the internet… there won’t be any reason to visit websites”. Several users speculated this could lead to paywalls or information monopolies controlled by mega‑corps, and that AI might end up stuck in a “frozen” info‑ecosystem. Nevertheless, voices noted that professionals and academics will continue publishing in alternative forms, and some predicted that forums like this one may persist as refuges of human‑generated discourse

AI is going to destroy most of the internet this same way. there won't be any reason to visit websites when AI can easily and instantly aggregate all the information from them

funnily enough, web forums are gonna be some of the last holdouts from the AI effect. the reports of autoadmit's demise may be greatly exaggerated

This happens to me on legal research sometimes too. I’ll ask ChatGPT pro an important question and even use deep search and then I’ll notice it is mostly referencing shitlaw websites and other really questionable sources.

yeah it's gonna be a strange convergence effect where AI destroys all of the websites it's dependent on for training, freezing itself in time at some point of internet information ecosystem collapse

i think that it's actually something that should be seriously worried about but i dunno what can be done to try to combat/mitigate it. it's really easy to imagine a future where AI has killed off the internet but the information that AI is trained on is corrupted/biased by its megacorp masters, and we end up trapped in a dystopian dead end of ignorance. i actually think that this scenario is reasonably likely to happen, especially because AI and the demographic transition of boomers to le 56% mystery meat is going to rapidly speed up the competence crisis

people might just end up paywalling everything online with at least a nominal fee. surely by that point LLM agents could just autonomously navigate the registration and payment though, and it would be worth it for the big enterprise models

That’s already been happening for years even before AI. The world is a much dumber place than it used to be when we grew up, no question. In any case, most useful knowledge comes from reputable professionals and academics and the like, and these types are going to continue to create content, though a lot of it may shift from blogs and traditional websites to white papers or industry regulations. I agree this will probably make it easier for mega corps to corrupt the whole process, but what we have today is already a joke, tough to picture it getting so much worse.

a really remarkable phenomenon that I noticed a few years ago is that potential clients are constantly calling me, then asking me "who is this." This happens regularly.

I eventually figured out that people are just googling "lawyer ___ county" on the phone and clicking without even looking. That's not "failing to do the research" it's a whole separate level; I would imagine that choosing a lawyer is a pretty big deal but that's how little effort they put in.

The point is, that is how everyone is going to make decisions, about everything, moving forward. ai, read the first sentence, assume it's gospel
