Andrew Anglin, founder of the neo‑Nazi website Daily Stormer, owes a $14 million judgment in the case Gersh v. Anglin due to a default judgment entered in August 2019. Here’s how it unfolded:
1. “Troll Storm” Against Tanya Gersh
• In April 2017, Tanya Gersh, a Jewish real estate agent in Whitefish, Montana, was targeted in a coordinated online harassment campaign.
• Anglin published Gersh’s personal information and encouraged his followers to flood her family with threats and hate-filled messages.
2. Legal Claims
• Gersh filed suit for invasion of privacy, intentional infliction of emotional distress, violation of Montana’s Anti‑Intimidation Act, and related claims .
3. Anglin’s Non‑Appearance
• Anglin failed to appear for court proceedings (including a deposition).
• The court entered a default judgment, meaning Gersh automatically won due to his non-response .
💵 Why $14 Million?
• In July 2019, Magistrate Judge Jeremiah Lynch recommended awarding $4 million in compensatory damages and $10 million in punitive damages, the maximum under state law, citing the “particularly egregious and reprehensible nature” of his conduct .
• U.S. District Judge Dana Christensen adopted that recommendation in August 2019, finalizing the $14 million default judgment .
🔍 Current Status
• As of now, Anglin has not paid any part of the judgment.
• In April 2021, Gersh’s legal team filed motions to compel him to disclose assets (including cryptocurrency) and comply with the court’s orders .
• In November 2022, a bench warrant was issued for Anglin’s arrest after he continued to ignore the court’s orders .
