I wiped down the conveyor belt three times before realizing it wasn’t dirty—it was just reflecting my face.
Karen came back with her receipt. Said I “double-charged the Bounty.” I apologized and offered a refund. She declined. Said she “just wanted it acknowledged.”
I nodded. The belt kept moving. The items didn’t.
The elderly man had vanished. But his wallet was still there.
I paged Tabitha to the front. She took one look at me and smirked. Slammed her Big Gulp on the register. “It’s called customer service, Evan.”
A child screamed in Aisle 8. We don’t have an Aisle 8.
I shredded the return slip anyway.
This is fine.
It’s always been fine.
Everything is—
everything.
