So Hitler just began bribing them. He offered them millions of reichsmarks to go command the battles he felt like fighting. As the war got worse the top brass raised their fees. As Russia was closing the generals were scouting around for prime retirement real estate. They had no idea the outside world wasn't ever going to let them ride off into the sunset.
It's also a misconception that the generals tried to assassinate Hitler. It was the middle managers that did. The guys beneath Mannstein, Paulus, Steiner, and Rommel. They weren't on the take. Valkyrie was a bunch of guys who weren't getting bribed and they knew the same shit the generals did but didn't have the incentive. Rommel tangentially knew about the plot but wasn't directly involved. |
