It seems weird that another athlete bumping into you or causing you to fall should be accepted when we're trying to figure out who is the fastest person/team. Time trials allow people to perform without being affected by another athlete/team's mistakes.

Competition is part of the challenge. Athletes often perform better when they're being pushed directly by competitors in a race. Time trials are too sterile
