It's turned into a very profitable business model.

Perhaps a lot of people can't afford them, or prioritize screens and various service subscriptions over pets?

but proles used to just impulse buy them as puppies then drop them off at the used dog store when they realized it cost money. every college educated woman and like half of males had a used dog ten years ago.

all the vets i've known have sold out to PE funded outfits and they upsell obscenely. i assume that the cost of having a dog has shot up dramatically.

My last clinic discontinued its exotic animal BU because dogs & cats were so ridiculously profitable... despite the huge markup for "exotics" (i.e., anything not a dog or cat).

it's growing and has grown tremendously over the past 2 decades. every birdshit family now has multiple dogs. even non-ghetto blacks have a dog now, something you didn't see before. latinxs are all packing 2 pitbulls each.

the whole thing fucking sucks

Chewy alone has a 17B market cap, and they only recently went public.

Maybe dogs are just passe, and more preftigious animals like rabbits are more popular?

Dogs and pets are ridiculous. Children are drawn to them, however. I couldn’t imagine wasting money on a dog/cat/pet, but that being said, my BIL and his wife have a dog as do my SIL and her husband.

My father has a dog and cats that live on the farm with them, but they’re not really pets. The cats live in the barn and catch rodents and the dog barks at people who come up and shouldn’t be there.

It is rather strange that we've genetically engineered small mammals to fill a role of emotional servitude.

I'd wager that a big part of that is the destruction of the nuclear family.

There's also a whole thing where PE firms have bought up a huge portion of vet clinics so vet care is now 10x more expensive.

ofs, people are spending way more on pets than ever before, "go sleep with the dog" now doesn't make sense as a saying, as the dog often sleeps in the bed. it's definitely a lucrative space to be in
