This rich agricultural land they conquered depends on irrigation from the dam. That's gone now. Makes me think the negligent failure of the dam is the most likely explanation. If it was intentional, it was a very short-sighted panic move on the part of military leaders scared of the Ukrainian offensive.

You're right- I'm sure he forged that 1930s postage stamp showing the areas which benefit from the dam under current Russian control. My bad.

Also screws Ukrainian agriculture around Krivy Rig. 800 sq miles of land were irrigated by that reservoir there.

Wonder if this will cause wheat prices to go up again.

True, that's the Ukrainian hit, but it's far smaller than the Russian area affected.

Doubt either side did it intentionally. It hurts the Ukies too. They need the electricity produced by the dam and nuclear plant. And they needed the water too.

That's just his opinion, and the collapse is a few days after deterioration of the dam first became visible on satellite AND it coincides with the record high water levels in the reservoir.

Record high water levels + dam already visibly starting to come apart is a lot more persuasive to me than what that tweet says.

It could be a combo. Dam was deteriorated to the point where relatively light shelling tied to the counteroffensive broke the camel's back. Shelling that normally would have done cosmetic damage only.

Ukraine had already bombed the dam many times. The sections it aimed for were right next to the section that was damaged most recently. I don't know how you can bomb a dam multiple times over a period of months and expect people to believe you didn't cause it to fail, but that's what Ukraine has to do now. All they can really do is shout you down at this point since all signs point to them being at fault.

OTOH, this does reduce Ukraine's economic incentive to recapture the territory they lost. I guess that makes it more likely they will eventually conclude "fuck it, just let Russia keep the land east of the Dnieper and let's move on."

If they only cared about economics they would've accepted becoming a client state of the Russians like Chechnya did. They have a higher nationalist ideal.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dnieper_Hydroelectric_Station

During World War II, the strategically important dam and plant was dynamited by retreating Red Army troops in 1941 after Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union. American journalist H. R. Knickerbocker wrote that year:[7]

The Russians have proved now by their destruction of the great dam at Dniepropetrovsk that they mean truly to scorch the earth before Hitler even if it means the destruction of their most precious possessions ... Dnieprostroy was an object almost of worship to the Soviet people. Its destruction demonstrates a will to resist which surpasses anything we had imagined. I know what that dam meant to the Bolsheviks ... It was the largest, most spectacular, and most popular of all the immense projects of the First Five-Year Plan ... The Dnieper Dam when it was built was the biggest on earth and so it occupied a place in the imagination and affection of the Soviet people difficult for us to realize ... Stalin's order to destroy it meant more to the Russians emotionally than it would mean to us for Roosevelt to order the destruction of the Panama Canal.

The flooding surge killed 20,000 to over 100,000 unsuspecting civilians, as well as Red Army officers who were crossing over the river.[8] It was partially dynamited again by retreating German troops in 1943.[citation needed] In the end, the dam suffered extensive damage, and the powerhouse hall was nearly destroyed. Both were rebuilt between 1944 and 1949.
