as for brand-name bands, i always go with Grateful Dead or Pink Floyd. PF is controversial, but the ratio of quality to mass popularity is just mystifying. they had like 2 radio singles, but somehow sold more records than the Beatles to 3 generations of kids. |

A group of literal white haired old men hippies were playing at the bar, and they were basically only playing Allman Brothers songs. Not the likely famous ones, but the less well known. They fucking nailed all of it. It was amazing. |

They got really big with the Out of Time album (Losing My Religion) in 1991 and it was basically all downhill after that. So their commercial fame coincided with their weak period musically. I love 1983-1991 REM but I really hate Everybody Hurts and a lot of their other big famous songs. |

In the 80s and 90s, there were "Classic Rock" stations that played late 60s/70s rock (and some 80s stuff that fit in with that vibe like Dire Straits). Then there were also "Oldies" format stations that played 50s and early 60s stuff (Elvis, Frankie Valli, early Beatles, Motown, etc). |
