You aren't wrong, but it also reeks of desperation, not to mention basically no one cared about the N64 after turn turn of the millennium, it's insane how dead it was while PS1 was still peaking. There is an irony to it imo, or a bit of realization that if they made another DK64, people would trash it so they went another way.
At the same time, could there be CBFD if there weren't a litany of Scumbag titles paving the way like Turok, War Gods, Duke Nukem, wrestling et al? CBFD is like the N64's Scumbag magnum opus. It's a merging of the console's two preeminent genres - cute platformers & Scummy violent shit.

DK64 was a really good game IMO - it just didn't get a lot of love for being super solid and having a lot of nuance - it was fun, atmospheric and friendly to different ages of players.
CBFD on the other hand was one of the best games on N64 - probably the last "great game" of the system. OOT was obviously GOAT on N64, but CBFD was really up there - both the story mode and the versus mode were incredibly well done.
That said, it was a neglected masterpiece but it also represented the coming of age for a specific generation of people. As a kid in grade school you would get N64 and play Banjo Kazooie and maybe even have played a conker game on Gameboy (I never did I don't think).
By the time you were ready to go to high school, CBFD came out and inaugurated a new chapter in your adolescence as you became less of an innocent kid.
As I replayed the game when I got older (maybe board one time in senior year of high school or early college) - you also begin to resonate with the adult themes way more and how Conker can't get his love back despite all his money and power. It's a pretty major theme to learn from.
