1. Let them go first. It’s not worth the mental energy to evaluate every interaction re: who got there first, how much of a rush I’m in, etc., so just let them go first.

2. If they wave for me to go first, accept their offer. Sometimes I don’t have to waive people through because you can tell by how quickly they approach the intersection. They’re obviously in a bigger hurry and they’re not even going to stop.

But sometimes you both arrive at the same time. I will always waive them through (see #1), but if they waive me through as a counteroffer I always accept. I’m not going to get into a back and forth waiving contest.

These two simple rules make life easier although you will wind up at your destination 5 seconds later, on average.

I used to get into the back and forth but then I developed my policy of accepting their counter. I made the first offer to save time and stress, if you aren’t going to accept my generous offer then I’m going to go. Fuck you.

If you arrive at the same time, the person on the right of the other driver has the right of way. Very simple

The fact this isn't widely known and reflexively followed is an INDICTMENT on immigration

The worst antisocial drivers around me are niggers in Nissan Altimas and fuming birdshits in $80k pickup trucks

What about when you and the car directly opposite you arrive at the same time, one of you is making a turn and the other isn't?

The one going straight goes first.

Also to add to your OP:

The real question is when you both get there first, and it is clear that the driver on the right does not understand the "right goes first" rule. As a rule, I evaluate IMMEDIATELY whether that person understands the rule or not (based on their hesitation to move/facial expression/etc) and if I determine that they don't KNOW THE RULE like their fucking birthday, I put the gas pedal to the mat.

I'm not going to assume everyone knows this so I just waive them through. Makes life much easier.
