If we assume that there are explanations for Trump's support for Putin/Russia beyond conspiracy theories that he's a Russian asset or being blackmailed, it would likely be that he wanted to make himself look like the hero by ending the war, and he believed that the easiest route was to limit military support and pressure Ukraine into making concessions.
The world has realized Ukraine can and will win this war. You absolutely do not want to be on the side of the loser coming out of this especially if that's Russia: the aggressor. Even Lukashenko is apologizing to Ukraine and distancing Belarus from having any role in the war. Orban is out in Hungary and Magyar is as pro-Ukraine and anti-Russia as it gets.
Russia is imploding, running out of allies and does not appear to have any clear path to victory in Ukraine. In order to not come out of this looking like a loser, Trump has to be either supporting of Ukraine or neutral. |
