I basically have no opportunity for growth or advancement or more money and it's a really bizarre feeling. I'm already at the "top" of my gig, doing the highest level cases (murders and sex crimes) and there's nowhere to go "higher" short of getting some other job. And the rates are set by the state, so the only way I can more money is by the legislature increasing the hourly rates which they do every few years. I'm also not really improving my skills and nobody is pushing me and challenging me to be a better lawyer, so my legal abilities are very stagnant.
It's a weird feeling being ~40 and in this position, as someone who strived for the first 30ish years of his life. |

I'd never do a PWH for $5K. I don't think anyone but a bottom-feeding shitlawyer would either.
And I don't know where I'd get 50+ such gigs a year to be able to even make what I'm making now, aside from the fact that it's more stressful and annoying work than my current work. |

What you're really trying to do from then on is create the same output, but work fewer hours (actual hours, not billed ones). My paycheck has only kept up with inflation for the past five years or so, but I can now do my job in ten hours a week and only work an ACTUAL forty or more a couple times a year.
From what I remember about brief writing, for example, lawyers were pretty sloppy about plagiarizing old stuff. If it was (say) a fraudulent transfer they would just pull out an old fraudulent transfer brief and start from there. But you should have a piecemeal database at this point-- if there's a section on X, you have an easy way to find your boilerplate on exactly that topic. You should be an expert at finding somebody else's brief on Westlaw/Lexis and minimizing your time spent. You should learn enough VBA to automate the stupid shit that lawyers spend manual time doing. Etc. |
