It worked its way through the population, becoming weaker each time, until now its not that dangerous.
There's also a lot less people dying "with covid" because we're not testing as much - so if someone has a heart attack and happens to have covid we're no longer calling it a covid death.
IMO, covid was a real pandemic - it was probably at least 10x worse than swine flu. But we took 10,000x more extreme measures to combat than we did with swine flu (and they were stupid - because we all got COVID multiple times anyway).

(i) Because a virus that kills its host is not a good virus. You can't replicate if your host is dead. And in modern times, a virus really can't spread if the host is very sick - because people stay home or are hospitalized. The evolutionary goal for a virus is to become super weak to the point where its hosts are walking around passing it around to everyone. That's why omicron did more to stop COVID than the vaccines - it was no big deal so people didn't even know they had it - and just walked around passing it around to everyone.
(ii) once everyone has had the virus, your body has some level of natural immunity and the tools needed to fight off the virus a second time. that's why the "novel" part of it made the virus so dangerous (and so not dangerous to kids). If your immune system was young and adaptable it was nbd. But if you're older, your immune system relies more on past experiences, and it didn't know wtf this virus was
(iii) the weak were knocked out in the initial wave. its sort of how people will see some building from 1923 survive a hurrican while some buildig from 2020 does not, and will shout "we can't build houses like we did back in 1923!" - ignoring the fact that 98% of houses from 1923 are no longer standing - its just that this one was built particularly strong and located in a particularly well protected plot. a great number of people who were weak and near death died during COVID.... |
