Yeah but if we don't keep developing it someone else will. If we have an all powerful entity better have it on our side than someone else's. Also if China makes AGI and tries to use it to destroy us, the best defense against that is if we have our own. So we essentially need to make one just in event that our enemies do, because we would need one.
Mutually assured destruction prevents wars, e.g. no war between major powers. If Iran had a nuke, we wouldn't attack them. Similarly AGI or equivalent that has the power to destroy humanity if everyone has one the odds of war go way down.
yeah i don't find that compelling at all. we already have nukes; we don't need another instant destroy button lol. and maybe it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if other countries had some leverage over the school bully. but the main thing is, these technologies are existential threats to humanity already in a much bigger way than petty rivalries between nation states

If this destructive force can be unleashed, it will. And if it's coming to kill us isn't the best defense to have our own AGI to battle the enemy AGI like kaiju?

These doomsday stories are planted by established players looking to lock in their position. They've used the GOP enough to get their feet under them and now they will move to libs to get a regulatory framework in place to ensure no future competition.
also i'm sure Bernie and them are advocating for other countries to come up with similar policies. would you think it was a good idea if China committed to it too?

There is no scenario where our enemies stop trying to destroy us. Please don't be naïve. That's like the climate change argument first we're going to transform the West and THEN we'll go to Uganda and beg them to shut off power in the rural villages to save the planet from global warming. It's like huh? What? Let's just keep one foot in reality at least.

This stuff is coming, legislation or not. Better to have the US continue to lead in AI and put some safeguards in place, than to try to pause while China keeps going.

They're giving away product to destroy the competition. As soon as all competition is put out of business they jack up the fees and cover everything in spam and garbage. We're 10 years out from enshittification of AI. Right now it's about making you so dependent on it that you stop using anything else.

Bernie sanders is retarded. You can't stop it. And people are literally retarded if they think something like codex astra isn't already "super". Maybe it isn't "super" in the hands of a mentally retarded person, but we are talking about the model that solved multiple erdos problems before it was released.
cr. i literally said aloud earlier "it sounds so fucking stupid when people promote this bc it's obviously not going to happen." good for Bernie for trying but it's embarrassingly naive for people to entertain it ever getting passed by our corrupt corporate stooge government

It's already over. Doesn't matter what kind of government we have. It's like pandoras box. You ban it, there is enough there already someone somewhere else will replicate it. You can only slow it down. And it is a Joke to act like we are slowing it down when we are funding multiple trillion dollar multi-national machines to accelerate it.

Once it became pretty clear that it's possible, there's no way, barring external intervention by inhuman actors, like a major impact event, that the genie goes back into the bottle
Every government thinks they "win" if they can develop it first and will "lose" if they don't. No regulation is going to keep them for going for it. I mean, our CIA runs drugs for chrissake
