When Sheridan’s attack finally came, Pickett did not even know that the battle had started (some acoustical quirk apparently kept the sound of the firing from reaching him) and by the time he got the news his line had been completely broken. Sheridan took 5000 prisoners, the survivors went streaming off beyond rallying, and Lee’s last chance to keep the Federals away from the South Side railroad was gone beyond recall. Pickett’s men unquestionably would have been beaten, even if Pickett had been present, because Sheridan’s advantage was overwhelming, but Lee was unforgiving.
