Pixies were great they were the first band to write pop songs with a grunge theme. They will always be the first movers in grunge pop. But in the long run they weren't incredible songwriters. They should be in the rock hall of fame and it's stupid that they're not. Pearl Jam is one of the greatest bands ever to write almost entirely in 1 4 5 progressions. Nearly all of their songs recycle the same chords over and over again. They were brilliant tunesmiths and deserve a lot of credit. But they also took the grunge sound and turned it into really cheesy pop music. They are sort of like The Eagles or something. I personally can listen to it but would often prefer not to.
