top three songs for each
nirvana (toughest, as they have the least spread in quality) = smells like teen spirit, serve the servants, heart-shaped box
soundgarden = burden in my hand, pretty noose, spoonman
alice in chains = would, man in the box, down in a hole
pearl jam = alive, jeremy, evenflow

"grunge" killed metal, while also being prominently rooted in metal.
pearl jam is the odd man out, while also featuring the most guitar solos, a hallmark of metal.
kurt cobain hated pearl jam and loved metallica.
much of the seattle sound comes from people who grew up in and around chicago.

it's nearly impossible to go back and listen to the stuff
really it was an expiation. Gen-X was crushed under boomer nostalgia from 1975-1990. All radio, all rock culture, etc. was holdover boomer stuff. Xers had this little niche of "college radio" to build their own world.
"Alternative", "indie", "college", etc. All the names give away that it was supposed to be something apart and underneath.
Nirvana broke the ceiling and alternative festivals like lollapalooza etc were the first mainstream real youth culture since the late 60s that was entirely by and for youngs.
But it was meant to be a bomb, not a monument, so it went off and then nothing of it was left. There was a great void in the second half of the 90s: numetal, rap metal, aging Metallica, aging Smashing Pumpkins, etc... all until the rebirth of corporate pop with Justin and Brittney and TRL and all that

Nirvana were capable of writing actual 3 minute, structured, melodic rock songs with actual hooks, one of the last bands to do so consistently after The Police. people forget that 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' was an actual top 10 pop song, charting alongside Michael Jackson and Mariah Carey. the rest of those bands were just different formulations of indistinct sludge rock and guitar center hack riffing/finger noodling.
Nirvana are overrated at this point, because they basically only put out 1 and 1/2 proper albums. but they were 1st rate briefly, at their peak. the rest of 90s 'alt rock' is garbage.

Pearl Jam isn't in the same class as the others.
It is hard to rank the other three.

Some great comments ITT.
Cobain was an unintentional savant melodic genius, a figure of endless contradiction, tragedy and triumph, and the last true Rock Star of the monoculture and his death deprived us of a generation's worth of additional brilliant music and other artistic output, including in directions he was only hinting at in '94 (e.g., Do Re Mi; his new fixation on Stipe). He was also a lowkey Very Odd Dude--can you imagine a modern popstar who is obsessed with, simultaneously, The Wipers, Lead Belly, William S. Burroughs, and human anatomy? Also, fuck every faggot around him who dragged him deeper and deeper into the H lifestyle; they have blood on their hands for all time. In addition as I continue this speech, Cobain wrote Live Through This and Courtney Love is a succubus.
I like the poast above describing Hair Metal / Cockjock Rock as an early manifestation of Boomer ossification and "everything belongs to me." The 80s was a disaster for rock and the music was simultaneously becoming stagnant and ridiculous, almost byzantine-oriental in its inward looking ornamentation. Grunge channeled the dual influences of punk and pop to destroy that shit, the monumental nature of which undertaking should not be understated, and we're all better for it. But the other poast above is also credited in that there is an inherent problem with grunge in that it's designed to be in opposition to something and once that something has been defeated, you lose your raison d'etre. Even if Cobain had lived there would have had to have been an evolution; we have real-world examples of that happening, e.g., Grohl, as milquetoast as some of his work has been, did it. But the sudden collapse of grunge, as opposed to a more gradual transition, left a hole which allowed some very bad music to fill the void.

"the 80s was a disaster for rock" errs a bit chicken little; hair metal and nu-glam were 120 as fuck but there was still plenty of innovation and solid songwork going on through the decade. guns n roses, journey, van halen, springsteen, and other pure classic rock bands had their heyday in the 80s, real metal was going strong through the rise of metallica, megadeth, judas priest et al, new wave came to be, rush revitalized prog rock, and other groups put out truly genre-mixing or experimental work like bowie's masterpiece lets dance or toto iv. even the direction 90s alternative/grunge went to break out of the ossification owes as much to 80s alt rock and punk precursors like REM, black flag, and the violent femmes as it can claim itself.

Alice in chains made the best music overall.
Nirvana was obviously the most significant and had the highest high.
I would rather meet and hangout with Cornell above anyone else in these bands and his death upset me more than Cobain's.
I spent the most time listening to pearl jam at the time.
