Furious at another parent, am I wrong here?

I let him take $10 of his savings to spend at the gift shop, figuring he would get some plastic toys or rock candy. When he came home he had a stuffed dinosaur and two different science experiments. I asked him how he got it and he said that his friends mom who was chaperoning paid for it all because his $10 wasn’t enough for everything he wanted. It was a lot and I would never have paid for three items even if I was there.
This morning I saw the mom on school message and sent her a thank you. I was still pissed that my attempt to teach him the value of money had been thwarted, but did want to say thank you since we did the science experiments over the weekend. She responds back, “Awwww! They had so much fun. Everything ended up being $55 after your son’s $10 wasn’t enough.” And then she put a pic of her fucking Venmo. She didn’t explicitly ask me to reimburse her, but obviously expects me to.
I am seething, brothers. I barely know this woman. What kind of parent drops $55 on a kid on a field trip? I asked my son and she didn’t do this for everyone, just her kid and mine, since only a few kids had brought money for the gift shop. I was pissed that my kid didn’t have a chance to practice budgeting and now I am livid at her audacity.
What do I do? To answer your first question, she is some kind of Protestant. |

EDIT: holy shit, I missed this was a friend's mom. That makes her behavior even worse. I've bought my kids' friends things like this. I will often buy a book for a kid at my kids' book fair if their parent forgot to send them $$ or something. I have NEVER asked for repayment. In fact, I've never even brought up with the parent that I'm the one who bought the book. That's insane. |
