Never and I never even knew anyone who did or saw anyone reading them in school (80s and 90s). Comics seemed like some leftover dying thing from the boomer times and I was surprised by their later resurgence in popularity or that there were somehow all these "comics fans" around.
People knew Superman, Batman, Spiderman and the Hulk, because of the tv shows and Saturday morning cartoons, but nobody had any idea about the "X-men" or the "Avengers" or what have you.

i was given a handful of comic books as a kid (age 7-12) and liked reading them but never wanted to read more. i preferred real books, even as a kid.
(edited) i did enjoy shows like xmen the animated series and batman the animated series
