And I don’t mean welfare queen schtick I mean that in private they would tell you that the vast majority of the worlds underclass lived on the brink of starvation and had no opportunity to better themselves, but in the U.S. our poors lived better than all but the top 5-10% in most other countries, and they would cite the per capita GDP stats comparing to Europe (which got even more drastic since) and say things like “how many people below the poverty line in the U.S. have a car? Or eat out once a week? Or blast their A/C all summer and their heat all winter?” And “in what other countries do they give their poor special privileges to access higher education? We bend over backward to make sure we do everything we can to help any person who is poor but shows a glimmer of talent and capability and makes a minimal effort to organize their presentation of those talents to a university.” And if you really got them going they’d eventually build to “the New Deal was a mistake” and “maybe we should engineer another dust bowl” and the lawyer nerd versions would start ranting about the Lochner court. And those Reaganite edgelords were full of shit and ultimately half hearted in making these arguments as another attempt to justify tax cuts, but they had a point. 90% of the pity we show to poor people in the U.S. is just middle class people enjoying the implication about their relative status and indulging their own class insecurity and envy of the wealthy.
