A friend of a friend, Stanford grad, made a lot of money from his companies recent IPO, invited us up to their ski chalet for "a little thing." I assumed it would be like every other gathering like this where everyone is a new money striver in Patagonia and people are trying to show off their expensive watches. Nope. This was a full on old money WASP Christmas.
Pull into the driveway: chalet glowing like a movie set. Valet parks the car. Entire valet staff was white. Walk in and there is zero chaos. Someone just takes our coats without asking and hands us a drink.
Decor: straight 1930s/40s. Real greenery, old glass ornaments that look like they survived wars, warm lamps, tasteful ribbon. No LED anything. No dollar store chink shit. The tree was an actual Douglas fir grown on the property.
Main room had a live band. Like, a crooner with an actual band in tuxes playing the old Christmas standards. Dean Martin, Sinatra, Bing Crosby. Sax, upright bass, the whole deal. Perfect background noise and immaculate vibes.
And best of all, chestnuts roasting. There was a legit setup, someone tending them over an actual fire. Smelled insane. I've never even seen chestnuts IRL before. They tasted incredible.
Bar situation was also unhinged, in a good way. Old time cocktails only. Martinis, Manhattans, sidecars, French 75s. Big clear ice. Proper glassware. Home made Egg nog with big cinnamon sticks. No one asked for tequila sodas or White Claw. If somebody did, I assume they were quietly escorted out into the snow.
The crowd was exactly what you think:
Men in tuxes, cashmere sweaters, or velvet jackets
Women in dresses that look simple until you realize the fabric is doing something expensive
Children in suits and dresses politely playing with each other, no screens.
Nobody was taking pictures. Nobody was looking at their phone. It was like the whole party had an unspoken rule: if you need proof you were here, you should not be here.
At one point I posted up near the fireplace with my drink and watched the snow falling outside lit by the Christmas lights. It was so beautiful I shed a tear. The house was dripping with prestige.
The party host got everyone's attention and gave a speech reminding us all that we're here to celebrate the birth of our Savior, thanked us all for coming, and said ever since he was a kid growing up in Busan it had been his dream to host a party like this. Honestly don't think it will ever be topped.

as is the case with rare earth metals, the Chinese wiped out domestic US production and we have to import them from Asia.
