aren't they the best at bankruptcy?
why don't they just do their own bankruptcy?

LJL at the absurdity of this. They have 1,200 lawyers making them $2B in revenue. They only have 179 real partners and PP(E)P of $5.6M. How do you screw that up?
It's like having a money printing machine and mismanaging it so bad that you can't pay your bills.

It's really it. After working long enough, I've come to the conclusion that there are two kinds of successful businesspeople:
1.) Those that build durable companies through the lens of "what is best for the customer and other key stakeholders" - this requires great patience and discipline, but can lead to the best returns in the long run
2.) Those that figure out how to most efficiently transfer cash from source A to source B while pocketing as much as they can for themselves. The businesses run by these types may look successful, but are mainly just wealth transfer vehicles that get exposed when a downturn hits.
Our economy is chock full of #2. Not good!

Law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges has tapped restructuring specialists to assess options including a possible wind-down, as the crisis deepens at one of America’s largest and most prestigious law firms.
Weil is working with Brian Resnick, one of Davis Polk’s top bankruptcy lawyers, to advise on a potential restructuring, according to people familiar with the matter.
Davis Polk had previously advised Weil on a possible merger with a rival firm, but those talks collapsed, forcing it to consider other options. Beyond an unwinding, other options for the firm include a last-minute merger, or a slimmed-down standalone entity.
Davis Polk has worked on some of the highest-profile restructuring proceedings in the recent history of corporate America including AIG, Purdue Pharma and Spirit Airlines.
Weil is also interviewing several financial consultancies for a role to analyse its books and determine a course of action, the people added. Weil’s obligations include pensions and office leases around the world.
The move marks a rapid change of fortune for a firm that, just this summer, was ranked as one of the US’s top 30 law firms by revenue, which topped $2bn last year.
The Wall Street powerhouse was rated the 15th most prestigious law firm and was separately named by The American Lawyer in August as “A-List”, based on factors including revenue per lawyer, pro bono commitment and the satisfaction of its associates.
Ramona Nee, the partner chosen to lead Weil from January, has told the firm’s management committee that she will no longer take the job, the FT has previously reported. Nee informed her colleagues of the decision in September.
Weil and Davis Polk did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Weil, which employs about 1,200 lawyers globally and a further 1,000 staff, has been engulfed by a crisis in recent months following the departure of several top lawyers.
Chris Machera, who co-led Weil’s private equity practice, announced his departure in August, with other partners later joining him in a move to Paul Weiss.
In September Michael Aiello, Weil’s best-known US corporate M&A lawyer, announced he was leaving for Cravath with a group of colleagues. The same month David Avery-Gee, co-head of its London office, announced his departure for Sullivan & Cromwell.
The run of departures by some of the most important generators of revenue at Weil hit its business model and unsettled other lawyers, many of whom have since been in touch with other law firms as they try to assess contingency plans.
The crisis highlights how even the largest and longest-established law firms can be thrown into turmoil by an exodus of top talent.
Shutdowns among large US law firms are unusual. Stroock & Stroock & Lavan shut its doors in 2023. Dewey LeBoeuf filed for bankruptcy in 2012. Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft and Shearman & Sterling, both in recent years suffered a series of departures that led to mergers with rivals, though they are significantly smaller than Weil.
