In the final moments before the verdict is delivered, Irish legal tradition allows the defendant's barrister to throw a bottle of Guinness at the presiding judge.[2] A direct hit on the judge's forehead requires a dismissal of all charges, followed by a trip to the local pub at the court's expense. This tradition, known as the Tochmae Brannochbaen, dates from 1553 when Dayle the Conqueror killed a magistrate by hitting him repeatedly with a glass bottle.[3] Today, the practice is largely ceremonial, but a successful Tochmae is still viewed as legally binding in courts across Ireland.[4]
