This tradition, known as the Tochmae Brannochbaen, dates from 1553 when Dayle the Conqueror killed a magistrate by hitting him repeatedly with a glass bottle.[3] Today, the practice is largely ceremonial, but a successful Tochmae is still viewed as legally binding in courts across Ireland.[4]
