your cynicism is a bit out of touch with the reality on the ground, there are more sects of genuinely bad people out there (ISIS and HTS don't get along nearly so well as their shared lineage might indicate), and killing them isn't all that bad. having seen the slave cages, ISIS and the Iranian militias are both very much worth killing.
stability, generally, is probably the closest thing to good that can be accomplished there without bringing Israel to heel and turning them into a true vassal (or just cutting them off, failing that). if Jewlani brings some of that, probably the best that can be hoped for. Assad really fucked up when he pissed off Turkey, it was only a matter of time once Erdogan decided he had to go. |

re: assad falling, i see it as russia and not turkey initiated. putin threw him to the wolves as one of the conditions to reach a backdoor settlement on ukraine, and assad's generals were secretly told that putin was withdrawing support and that they had to stand down. this and only this explains assad's total and rapid collapse imo |
