In 1986 being black overall wasn’t the massive admissions boost that it became in the 90s and after. Eg a 32 then was an equivalent of a 163 ie an auto admit score at CCN and viable score at HYS for a black applicant with a reasonably high GPA from any UG school. Per this article it was more likely that a 32 scorer ends up a tier down from the “elite” tier, and at the “second tier private” schools race was like a 1.4x boost.

Also law school job placement was way more regional and a “big firm” was a 250 lawyer firm that would take something like 5-10 new associates a year, and USNWR wasn’t the dominant factor in the stats/placement/tuition arms race that ramped up in the mid-late 90s. |

He wrote a best selling book (I have not read it to know if it is well written). Got elected to senate in Ohio in competitive races. Generally has voted pretty MAGA.
