20K tundras on lots across the county

50K grand cherokees

42K RAM 1500s

EDIT: these are the number of cars on lot, not prices. This is like 2008-2009 inventory levels. Nobody can afford to buy. Bubble burst incoming.

The specialized tooling to fix modern cars requires a solid $1 million spend. Mom and pop shops literally can’t fix the door windows on a BMW because it takes a $15k tool to code the ECU to get the up down function to work. Only a stealership can afford the 7 figures in spend to be able to do everything. Mom and pop shops are folding nationwide. The dealership model is actually safer than ever.

they’re mostly integrated

guys with money get new cars every 2-3 years. so they call “their” salesman, tell them “hey I’m gonna be there getting my oil changed, let’s have a coffee and discuss my next purchase. a few months before it’s time they walk the lot and check out the inventory, and/or go online and see if they can find the color/options package they want. when the time comes they walk away with their new car and tell their sales guy, “see ya next time”
