First off, the POTUS doesn't have a magic wand. The US was the only first world country to see any amount of significant growth. The only one. Others are in outright decline. Donald Trump is a disaster. I support many of his individual policies but the macro summary, the whole of the parts, is genuinely awful. Gulf of Mexico, bullying Denmark and Canada, his weirdness with Putin that is inexplicable, the tariffs, Hesgeth, Department of "War", his cronyism and bullying of moderate GOPs and driving them out via primaries, parachuting dumb bimbos into nominations, the family business corruption in blatant sight, and of course, Iran, which was really just the icing on the cake. Add them up and you get Trump. The majority despises him. And he still went out and said make the election all about him

Voters said ok. And he lost SC and Mississipi and Texas and Kansas. And came to within a point of losing Florida.

But once migrants are in the country and working and building lives, it's a different story. Much more forgiving. In part because the immigrants are working. They aren't freeloading off the state. Doing stuff no one else wants to do. Images of ICE raiding houses and deporting a dad, no matter the reason, never looks good under any circumstances as it's breaking up a family and disrupting a life. Tugs at the human heart.

I remember a story from the early days of ICE raids when agents arrested a Chinese waitress in a small town in Kansas or Nebraska who'd illegally immigrated decades ago and how the town somehow stopped it because everyone knew her. Don't know the outcome but there was a cruelty there and that's not what people wanted.

Some basic shit is also that the Dems ran a more positive message campaign ("we will do X") compared to the GOP who could only really argue a negative ("Dems will be bad because of Y!")
