My black wife loves red wine. We have been to a couple of wineries and wine tastings. My running joke, which she hates, is when the waitress is still hanging around to see what we think I pretend I have a very fine palate and after a couple seconds of swishing the wine around in my mouth I'll go, "Oh, interesting, do I detect a hint of leather?"

The other week the waitress said the pinot we were tasting was a "little peppery" and after tasting it I said, "White pepper actually."

grapes sourced from oakville and st.helena are cr - the rest of napa is mostly flame relative to other areas in california that have as good/better wine w/o the 'napa' price premium.

wines produced by napa wine co. are also very cr because they're essentially 'wine production as a service' so winemakers who use them just focus on producing what they want and not all the overhead of owning vinyards, fermentation tanks, etc. the wines have to stand on their own quality and can't sneak by because the location is scenic for tourists

Santa Cruz Mountains has good Pinot and some great cabs.

Santa Rita Hills has solid domestic Pinot that I far prefer to Russian River Valley.

Even Humboldt and Mendocino make some cool, lower-alcohol wines.

paso robles is cr, though even that's been inching up in price over time.

as noted by another poster, santa cruz for pinot

santa barbara has some decent producers that don't command a huge markup

the key to understanding ca wine is that appellation as a concept isn't the same thing as it is in france. so, tons of great ca wines are blends and you can do that shit in much lower cost areas than napa.

Many of the wines from Napa are world-class. However, visiting Napa is now 10x as expensive as it was 15 years ago, and that part has become absolute flame. It's a beautiful area with countless wineries and vineyards but it has become egregiously expensive and focused on unimportant aesthetic details that are mostly flame. There are many more cost effective areas where the wine isn't as good but the wine tasting experience is better (Livermore, Central Coast, etc.).

It’s flame if there are bachelorette party buses in the parking lot. It’s not flame if it’s a private tasting with someone who knows his shit (lots of second career mos or Davis/Sonoma State guys who are really into it), or even a counter tasting if you know what you’re tasting. It’s a great opportunity to taste side by side.

It depends my brother

The right way to buy wine is start in your 20s and buy for drinking on a 7 to 30 year offset

The more modern way is to buy wine as you intend to consume it

There are Old World deals for both strategies.

If you are investing, look at brunello, bolgheri, chianti, second growth burgundy, Chile, in New World, Santa Cruz Mountains, Walla Walla pinot, Hawke's Bay and Canterbury Pinot. Top producers of fortified and desert wines all over the world are always cheap and pay major dividends after decades.

Some good advice here. Only word of caution is that tastes can change and the modern-styled Bordeaux you might by on futures in your mid-20s or the fruit bomb “cult” Pinots might seem silly to you 10-15 years later. (Speaking from some experience.) I’d avoid buying for the future now - you need to taste as much as you can and not worry about saving a bit by buying for the future. You can buy for the future in a few years.

Best thing you can do is to find a chill bro at a wine shop close to you and talk with him. Don’t worry about looking like an idiot or overpaying by $5-10 vs. some warehouse. Tell him where you are, what you think you like, and if he’s good he’ll be able to steer you. You need to taste side by side and taste distinct wines at first until you hone it in. Next time you go in, tell him what you thought about what you tasted.

Option B isn’t is good but it’s buying a mixed case from a good online wine shop, like Ansonia. They have “tour of France” or something like that cases that are good intros. They also provide cards with background info.

This is highly credited. And once you've found the type of wine you actually like he'll hook you up with their case pricing and you'll get it for cheaper than a warehouse anyway.

For people starting out it's not a bad idea to sign up for the shop's wine club if they offer it because it's an easy way to get good exposure to a wide variety of wines that are typically decent but not hyperexpensive.

No but as a rule it is overpriced and should be aged - it’s not that pleasant (and it’s wasteful) to drink young.

There’s also a lot just riding on the Napa designation and churning out $80-100 bottles of rather generic red wine.

The experience has also gotten very expensive. It’s nice and pretty but so are other wine regions.

I think this is fair. There's a lot of incredible wine coming out of Napa but there's also a lot of flame wine. The terroir ensures that even flamey wine from the region isn't terrible but there are a lot of $100 supergoy bottles being sold that don't intrinsically merit the price point but get bought anyway because "it's Napa." That said, to reiterate, great Napa wines are among the best in the world.

What “signifiers” are you talking about. The word “Napa” is the only one that matters and if you put that on the bottle then you have to meet the percentage. This is California we are talking about. The nazi regulators will choke you to death with administrative bullshit if they don’t like what you’re doing.

It is flame in that most of the price difference is based on scarcity rather than quality - but it’s a fucking mass-produced beverage so makes no goddamn sense to pay up for relative scarcity outside of the very top end. Like sure if you’re a billionaire collector you can buy the $100k super rare bottle which will probably appreciate, or you can enjoy drinking the very best thing that most people don’t have. But why would I pay $60 for something I am going to drink at home on a Tuesday that is maybe 5% better than a $30 wine from a bigger region (or maybe indistinguishable or worse)? And then this gets even worse if you are paying restaurant markups on already inflated prices.

What I mean is that in normal consumer goods there’s a quasi-rational price/quality correlation. Napa wine is priced higher mostly for reasons of scarcity and cartel behavior by top producers. But fundamentally it’s the same product as wine from Sonoma or Santa Barbara or France (outside Bordeaux and Burgundy) which are available at better prices because overall there’s no scarcity of good wine in the world.

fair for 90% of wine, but the best stuff comes from the best ground and that ground is expensive and produces a limited amount of juice. you can't scale up like beer and liquor. so really good wine is going to be expensive, there's no way around it, especially when it's coming from napa. there is a ton of stuff from chile/argentina/spain/portugal that beats mid-napa at twice the price. but the best napa stuff goes for $500+ just like the best old world stuff and it is worthy competition.

If you aren’t familiar with Euro wine feckless failsons then you haven’t spent much time around European wine circles. They have totally rigid class structure and inheritance practices. Second generation might learn from dad and even surpass him in technical ability, but at some point a moron inherits and runs the whole thing into the ground. Most of the good Euro wine bargains are people who made money doing something else and bought out a failed family business and are running on low margins to rebuild a reputation. In some cases they have to totally replant even though it means giving up years of sales and old vines cachet.

Not sure I can really call anything the best. I like Dunn Howell Mountain. The vintages from early 90s are really good. I would say that is my favorite wine to drink.

Duhart Milon and Leoville Barton are some of my favorite left bank wines. I’ve had first growths and they are certainly better but not by enough to justify the premium.

so he says the left Bank of Bordeaux as opposed to the right bank?? why not just say all of Bordeaux? the right bank is merlot based--merlot

The Cabernet Sauvignon predominant Left bank of Bordeaux has the first growths: Lafite,Mouton, Latour, Margaux and the second growths: Leoville las Cases, Ducru Beaucaillou, Palmer. . . I could go on and on and on, but I won't---idiots who don't know the difference deserve the plonk they grow and drink

Exactly. Overpriced second growth Bordeaux are the most flame, in my opinion.

The region produces some of the best in the world, but also a lot of price to value flame. More egregious flame, in my opinion, than Napa.

You can’t be overrated unless you’re highly rated to begin with and Left Bank Bordeaux is certainly highly rated. So if that’s not someone’s style of wine then I get why they would call it overrated. I don’t agree with it but it’s a logical opinion.

everything we know about wine comes from the ancient first growths in Bordeaux Left bank - they set the standard, and always have -- ask Jefferson

Hey real quick what are the clones planted at the five first growth estates in Boudreaux? That should be really easy for you to answer, right?

At what temperature is the first cold soak?

PS, everything we know about viticulture these days comes from America. It is research conducted here that determines the accolage distance Delmas will do after the vines go to sleep.

burgundy is the best region on earth hands down. stellar reds and whites, no one else does it. napa is close but they lean more fruit than terroir which makes burgundy so special.

the difference between Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and the pinot noir makes the comparison between apples and oranges; in comparing a Napa Cabernet Sauvignon or Napa Bordeaux blend with a burgundy red, do u even understand the difference between varietals, much less terroir?

Haven’t heard this. Napa land is so expensive I can’t see how it’s worth it when weed grows just fine almost anywhere in the much cheaper more northern parts of the state.

no, that's ridiculous. it take no space to grow massive amount of weed and illegal grows are in remote areas in the woods where nobody will find them. the soil, sun, water, etc don't really matter. why would some scuzzy weed farmer dude deal with all the cost and exposure of napa?

https://www.realclearscience.com/blog/2014/08/the_most_infamous_study_on_wine_tasting.html

the whole thing is designed to market wine to retarded rich people who gladly pay whatever just a means of socializing and the 'hobby' aspect. obviously it's a beautiful area and there is some great food and lifestyle stuff to do.

but the wine is flame. most wine is flame. only the most seasoned and knowledgeable wine drinkers have any chance at realizing any appreciation between different wines. people who can really do this have a genetic advantage and years of education. everyone else is completely and complicity full of shit or fooling themselves. if you don't mind that part, napa is 180.
