It actually sucks in retrospect till ssn 3, but still better than anything ever made

If you’re just drilling the episodes mid 5 to end of show is just superbly made esp irt NYC crew storyline

You're in for a treat-- season 1 and the first half of season 6 are generally considered the weakest stretches of the show. Starting with season 2, they eject a lot of the stuff that didn't work and improve on the stuff that did. Enjoy brother.

I’m going in pretty cold too; I know about the whole ending scene of the series of course but otherwise I only have suspicions and inklings about spoilers

I’m surprised so many people think the Massive Genius episode is one of the worst; there’s some bad writing but I thought the character work between Chris and Adriana was excellent and the stuff with Tony realizing that even if he’s a powerful and scary person he’s also a one note punchline to the “normal” world was good

Season 6 is actually shit on way too much it’s 180

The color tone changes throughout the season and there’s a cinematic shift after the ny crew meeting that is so genius and subtle

The last two seasons are criminally underrated. So is season 4, but not to the same extent. The real time reception of those seasons just proves how massive the show got and how much the culture implicitly already realized what a culture-shifting/defining achievement it was, so the bar was placed impossibly high. For me on rewatch the biggest realization of 5 and 6 was that AJ is phenomenal and Robert Iler did an amazing job. As a 20-something I could appreciate the old people bits with Livia, Junior, Paulie’s mom et al. but they do hit harder now. But I can’t believe how excellent the AJ stuff is and how predictive and relevant it is today. They were calling the entire incel/NEET crisis perfectly years before the iPhone and social media had even happened. Such a genius show.

AJ got a ton of quality ass though. he's a retarded megaloser in the show but he did ok for himself on that front. def not incel territory.

The entire plot where he simps for the Puerto Rican girl and then she dumps him for being a little beta bitch is the incel critique, especially his reaction to being dumped when he starts spending all his time online and is constantly bitching about his depression, culminating in his hilarious antics in the p—I will stop there to avoid any further spoilers. The fact that he can pull hot pieces of ass and we as viewers know this makes that plot line hit harder/even more inspired.

cr and also I think one of the reasons it holds up so well is that it was always dingy, so it doesn’t look outdated at all. it was always a feudal enterprise

but when I watched it as a kid it seemed pretty UMC or even kinda wealthy

No dude that’s just how boomers tastes were in the late 90s. The Sopranos house is decorated identically to my in-laws it’s hilarious. They are definitely supposed to be understood as these UMC LARPers that their UMC neighbors and classmates all recognize as interlopers, but defer to because of their rational fear of violence and the ability of capitalism and possession of the trappings of their social class to smooth things over socially, eg conversations with the Cusamanos that all revolve around restaurants, golf, vacations and college admissions. It’s very intentionally playing with Gatsby except the mafia dons’ desire is just to blend in with the wealthiest set of schlubs. That’s the whole fundamental joke and premise of the show, which is the same reason that it’s a hilarious premise/pitch to think of a mafia boss who sees a shrink and takes Prozac like he’s some faceless corporate stooge. And all of that is made even better by the fact that these characters are based on a smattering of actually mobsters in Jersey and Philly who really did go to shrinks, have names like Big Pussy and whose moms plotted to kill them.

the saddest thing about the sopranos is that the over-arching theme is about the decline of america generally, yet at the time it was made american seems like an absolute utopia comparatively.

lots of the 90s era film and tv was about america's decline. i think the only reason we don't make these anymore is that we've given up hope on things changing. the ending of the sopranos was supposed to be hopeful. back in the 90s there was still a feeling like we could turn things around.

It's because lib doctrine is now that any era in the past was more racist than the present and therefore worse. See also the tired line about how MAGA is inherently racist because America was never great for Blacks, women, etc. until 2008 or whatever, so if you want it to be "great again" you are just a bigot.

Mad Men actually tapped into a lot of the same themes as the Sopranos which isn't surprising given Matt Weiner's involvement in both.

Violently disagree as in I would happily get in a physical fight about this. It’s easily the most brilliant and amazing part of the show. Chase and his boomer writers are like the only self-aware group of boomers who ever had access to mass culture, and they used their moment to craft a perfectly clear distress signal that we were setting ourselves up for catastrophe and we were all too stupid and fat and happy to understand what they were saying until our rewatches decades later.

i think you misunderstand what i'm sad about. i'm saying i'm sad that the distress signal went unheeded, as evidenced by how much worse shit is today than when sopranos came out.

I guess it’s different if you actually watched the show as it aired. But you and I weren’t the audience for the distress signal. They were boomers mocking other boomers and pointing out what obnoxious, selfish hypocrites they all were as a generation, such that the sociopathic UMC striver gangster seemed relatable or at least naturalistic and totally plausible. To me it’s much more logical to be impressed with the work than dismayed that the boomers didn’t get the point looking back in 2024. They’re boomers. Of course they didn’t get the point. They are incapable of the self-reflection/self-criticism that getting the point would require. I would go as far as saying that the show itself always understood that it would go unheeded as a distress signal.

i watched it as it aired. yeah, most people around me didn't get the point. although i'm a prole so everyone around me just liked the broad gangster appeal and got MAF about the gay shit and dream sequences in the later seasons.

but this is what i was talking about with the second half of my OP -- this type of fight club/office space/the wire anxiety about a declining country was common back then. and the only reason i think we don't see it now is because we've lost hope. all of these works had a hopeful ending. chase is on record saying the final episode is supposed to be hopeful. that's what "don't stop believing" is all about. despite the tragedy and uncertainty that surrounds us all, we should remain hopeful. the reason shit like this doesn't get made any more is that the idea of being hopeful for a collective brighter future seems ridiculous now.

lol brother the end of Fight Club is not hopeful at all. Office Space is at most sarcastically hopeful, but the fact that Samir and Michael are still rat racing is an obvious tell that Judge doesn’t feel hopeful. Chase has said like 15 different things that all contradict each other about the ending.

Yes this was also why the reception was so bitchy. We waited for years, there was concerns about Edie Falco and others moving on to other projects, and then they came back with these half seasons that people had never heard of before. All normal now but was very agitating to mid 00s viewers.

Some of the cast members got fucked by Gandolfini's showing up on set whenever he felt like it (or not showing up for days). It prevented them from taking other jobs. But they didn't complain because JG was a god. Supposedly he used his clout to make sure they all got huge raises for the finale season.
