Mumbai hoarding collapse toll climbs to 14, case filed against ad agency
Strong dust storms followed by heavy rain caused mayhem in Mumbai on Monday evening with poles, scaffolding and trees uprooted in many areas. The biggest impact was seen in Ghatkopar where at least 14 people were killed and 74 injured as a giant billboard fell on a fuel station.
At least 14 people were killed and 74 injured after a giant billboard fell on a fuel station in Mumbai's Ghatkopar area on Monday. The incident happened due to strong dust storms followed by heavy rain which caused mayhem in the city.
The incident occurred at the Police Ground fuel station along the Eastern Express Highway in Pantnagar. Videos showed several cars being trapped under the billboard.
Hours later, Mumbai Police registered a case against Bhavesh Bhide, owner of the hoarding that collapsed in the city and killed 14 people and injured many more. Bhavesh Bhinde is the director of Ego Media Pvt Ltd, which installed the hoarding. Investigations are ongoing.
A National Disaster Response Force team has joined the rescue operation, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani (BMC) told news agency PTI.
"The injured persons were rushed to civic-run Rajawadi Hospital," the official said.
In response, the BMC issued a notice to the agency which put up the hoarding at the place. In a statement, the BMC said it allows holding size of maximum 40x40 square feet. However, the illegal hoarding which collapsed was of size 120x120 square feet.

Due to the inclement weather and dust storm, the Mumbai airport temporarily suspended flight operations for around one hour, which resulted in at least 15 diversions.
According to the India Meteorological Department, strong winds are likely to persist in some areas over the next four hours and people were advised to stay cautious.
A scaffolding fell on the road due to the storm on Thane-Belapur Road in Wadala.
