English people forgot they were German, picked the wrong side in two consecutive wars.

They knew the empire wasn't sustainable before WW1 and decided it would be better to take a backseat to the US rather than see the Germans supplant them. They basically tossed everything at defeating the Germany with full knowledge it would be their demise. Basically a controlled crash. And to be fair they had been punching above their weight class for too long as it was.

the UK lost WWII. that's a difficult thing for them (and even americans) to accept, but as a historical matter, that's what actually happened to them. their loss in WWII was both territorial and financial (end of the empire combined with the selling of london to international financial interests).

the UK has not been an independent nation since that time. it has been a 'soft colony' of both 'american' power and international finance, which has often dictated terms at a very granular level. for example, during the colliery shutdowns of the 1980's, international firms and investment trusts were often the ones calling the shots regarding which specific mining pits in wales or yorkshire would get the axe.

britons themselves had no say in these matters, having lost the war.
